AEW Star Believes Vince McMahon Was Biased Against Popular Gimmick WWE

During Vince McMahon’s numerous decades in charge of WWE’s creative countless WWE stars and gimmicks came and went through the curtain.

While many succeeded, so much more did not, and more often than not, especially in Vince’s latter years in charge, it largely came down to how Vince himself viewed a particular star or character.

One such star who fell victim to Vince’s different ideas for WWE creative was Matt Hardy, who despite achieving a great amount of success in the 90s and 2000’s returned to WWE in 2017, with a very different character in tow.

The character was that of the ‘Broken Matt Hardy’ a gimmick Hardy had built during his time in IMPACT between 2016-2017.

Despite the character arguably being amongst the hottest in the entire wrestling industry during its peak, upon its proper WWE implementation in 2019, Vince was not sold.

Speaking on a recent episode of his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy Podcast, Matt would reveal that Vince held a bias against the gimmick, due to it not being a WWE creation.

He said:

“Vince probably was a little biased towards Broken Matt Hardy in general, just because it wasn’t a WWE creation. Because he really is like, if it’s something he creates something he feels like he was a part of, he’s definitely going to lean into it and he’s going to promote it and push it a lot a lot more if he feels like it’s his creation.

“So this is something that was created outside the walls of Alexandria outside of the WWE, something that got over very much on its own, so I knew it was going to be a little more challenging”.

Matt would also reveal in the same interview that Triple H was much more receptive to the ‘Broken’ character, highlighting again, the differences between the old and new creative regimes in WWE.
