7. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart – SummerSlam 1994
While this match doesn’t quite hold up as well by today’s standards, Bret’s cage match from SummerSlam 1994 with his brother Owen received a five star rating at the time. Bret and Owen’s rivalry was a highlight of 1994 and it culminated with this cage match for the WWF Championship.
Bret has talked about making sure he took care of Owen in matches like this. A massive superplex from the top of the cage illustrates just how important that care was. Ultimately, this match showed how much care, effort, and chemistry went into this rivalry between brothers. The only thing that may have topped it is if Bret had been able to have a ladder match with his brother like he originally wanted.
6. Bret Hart vs. Chris Benoit – WCW Nitro (October 4, 1999)
When Owen Hart tragically died in May of 1999, Bret did not know if he would return to wrestling. Ultimately he did, although his career ended shortly afterward. Upon his return, he had one of his greatest WCW matches with Chris Benoit on Nitro. This match was a tribute to Owen and there couldn’t have been a better opponent than Benoit.
WCW was known for its horrendously overbooked storylines and matches during this time period but this was one occasion where they were low-key and respectful. Obviously, this was not a subject to make a mockery of. As a result, we got this very lovely technical wrestling match.
5. Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect – SummerSlam 1991
When people talk about taking the Intercontinental Championship back to its prestigious roots, this is a match they are talking about. While people like Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior were competing in the main events of pay per views, the Intercontinental Championship was being defended in matches like this.
Mr. Perfect was an ideal performer for Bret Hart at this point. He was an established upper-mid card heel and a damn good worker. Who better to have Bret defeat to win his first singles title at SummerSlam. Almost three decades later, this remains a classic match. Elevated by folklore, Hart and Perfect is in some ways the pinnacle of what the Intercontinental Championship was.
4. Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog – SummerSlam 1992
Bret Hart was destined for big things in 1992 but first, he had to pass the Intercontinental title on to someone new. One year after winning the title for the first time, Bret traveled to London, England to defend the title in Wembly Stadium. Perhaps the most iconic time the Intercontinental title was the main event of the show, Hart took on his brother-in-law, the British Bulldog.
People raved about this match at the time, heralding it as one of the best WWF matches ever. It has since been revealed that Bulldog forgot all the planned spots, resulting in Hart leading him through the entire 25-minute match. In many aspects, it remains one of his greatest performances.
