20 Times WWE Had The Wrong Star Win At WrestleMania

7. Triple H vs. Randy Orton – WrestleMania 25

In 2009 Randy Orton solidified himself as one of the top heels in the company. A win over Triple H to draw the heated rivalry to close at WrestleMania 25 should have cemented him as THE top heel in the company.

Orton had punt kicked Vince McMahon and RKO’ed Stephanie McMahon on route to the main event of the 25th WrestleMania where he would attempt to beat Triple H to capture the WWE Championship. All signs pointed towards this being the crowning moment for the heel Orton, except it wasn’t…

WWE opted to have ‘The Game’ get his revenge over Orton, this halted Orton’s rise to the top of the card and proved that when someone messes with the McMahons, they never win.

6. Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H – WrestleMania XXIX

Brock Lesnar returned to WWE the night after WrestleMania XXVIII and the whole complexion of WWE changed. Lesnar was a proper star and it felt like he could legitimately beat the hell out of anyone he stepped into the ring with.

Lesnar dispatched Triple H at SummerSlam in 2012 and was on course to be the most dominant player on WWE’s roster for years to come. Except Triple H would have to get his revenge back on ‘The Beast’…

Lesnar and Triple H were set to do battle at WrestleMania XXIX, and it was expected that Lesnar would steamroll over ‘The Game’. In reality, Triple H pinned Lesnar.

Triple H did not need to win, and Lesnar, who would go on to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX the following year should have been booked to make light work of Triple H. This was another baffling decision by WWE, but one that is not surprising given the fact that this is Triple H we are talking about.

5. Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker – WrestleMania XXX

As wrestling fans, we love to be shocked. No moment was more shocking than when the referee’s hand hit the mat for the third consecutive time and Brock Lesnar became the only man to defeat The Undertaker on the grandest stage of them all. However, just because it was shocking, doesn’t mean it was the right call.

The Undertaker, especially towards the end of his career, was all about WrestleMania. Who would face him at WrestleMania this year was the question on everyone’s minds leading up to WrestleMania. Lesnar made history by beating The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX but considering how things were handled afterward, it doesn’t hold the same weight in hindsight.

Lesnar was scheduled to leave WWE after WrestleMania 31. Had he left in 2015, this would have been a perfect story. He could have taken the rub from Undertaker and given it to Roman Reigns the following year, building a new star in the process. By re-signing, Lesnar remained unbeaten until November 2016.

The prestige of breaking the streak just kind of faded over time. Considering the Streak was the most important thing in WWE for over a decade, to have it not capitalized on makes it a prime candidate for this list.

4. CM Punk vs. The Undertaker – WrestleMania XXIX

If WWE were adamant about doing so, then CM Punk should have been the man to hand ‘The Deadman’ his first loss on the grandest stage of them all at WrestleMania XXIX.

After beating Taker at Mania XXX, Lesnar did not wrestle for another four months. The win should have gone to someone who was going to be around to carry on the momentum, and the perfect candidate was CM Punk.

CM Punk had been red hot for the previous 18 months, carrying the WWE Championship for all of 2012. Punk’s work in hyping up his clash with The Undertaker feud was stellar and the company should have realized they had a real star on their hands. Punk was charismatic and a fantastic heel. He would have been around week-in and week-out to gloat about his victory in a way that only CM Punk could.
