9 News Stories You May Have Missed (Aug 8 – Aug 15)

6. Jim Cornette Thanks Tony Khan

In more feel-good wrestling news, one of the hottest feuds in all of wrestling slightly thawed when professional Abe Simpson Jim Cornette had nice things to say about professional Milhouse Tony Khan and AEW.

Beautiful Bobby Eaton, one of the most talented in-ring workers and, by all accounts, nicest human beings to ever wrestle, sadly passed away last week.

Cornette had managed Eaton in the Midnight Express, and he released an emotional, heartfelt episode of his podcast remembering the man – in which he thanked Khan and AEW for their Bobby tributes:

“I want to say this also, a lot of people tweeted including the folks at AEW tweeted a nice graphic and a respectful message about Bobby. I know that some of the AEW personnel at various positions listen to the show. That’s not a side comment either. If anybody with access to Tony Khan can get to him, tell him that I heard everything that he said about Bobby and how respectful it was and how nice it was and I thank you Tony. Tony Khan is not a horrible human being. We may see way far apart on wrestling in a variety of issues but that was a cool thing to do Tony. I hope somebody will deliver that message to him.”

5. NWA Tag Title Match

Also following Bobby Eaton’s passing, FTR’s Dax Harwood uploaded an episode of NWA Pro Wrestling from March 26, 1988, from Dax’s private collection – which includes Tony Schiavone looking like this in the intro, he just wants to talk to you about your checking account!

But also shows off Bobby in a Midnight Express match against The Fantastics.

This got one fan fantasy booking FTR in the NWA’s Crockett Cup tag team tournament, which didn’t end up taking place last year. Dax actually replied:

“That is incredibly important to us; especially now. The lineage of the @nwa is deep & historic. We’d love the opportunity to fight for the belts too.”

To which the NWA tweeted:

“Sounds like NWA owner Billy Corgan & AEW President Tony Khan should have a talk.”

Given that AEW are currently promoting the NWA Women’s title match between champion Kamille and AEW’s Leyla Hirsch, this could nudge the Forbidden Door even wider.

4. CMLL In Trouble

One promotion yet to join the anti-WWE axis of awesome, however, is the oldest wrestling promotion still in existence, Mexico’s CMLL. Well, that’s because CMLL is a little busy with internal struggles right now.

CMLL announced on Tuesday that all three members of the faction La Nueva Generacion Dinamita – San-son, El Cuatrero and Forastero, have left the company, vacating both the CMLL World Trios and World Middleweight titles.

The statement says the departure was “by mutual agreement” despite all three men were scheduled for Friday’s Arena Mexico show

The trio have since uploaded a video explaining they want to work for new promotions while they’re young, and to recruit more wrestlers to their faction.

These are just the latest top stars to leave CMLL, with Diamante Azul, Rush, Dragon Lee, Bandido and Puma King all departing in recent years. This follows the death of the longtime owner of the company, Paco Alonso, in 2019. Soberano Jr, who currently wrestles for CMLL, has pointed blame at the promotion’s booker:

“Ultimo Guerrero is the one who is ending the CMLL and I do not speak it to speak I say it because I am within the company I realize things and it hurts to see how one person is killing everything”. oof.
