AEW Tag Team Splitting Up

Bolstered by the recent arrivals of The New Level and Motor City Machine Guns, the AEW tag team division has truly never been in a better place than it is right now.

However, with the increased competition, we could see some existing alliances come to an end in the coming weeks and months.

Here are three AEW tag teams to potentially split up soon.

Brodido (Brody King & Bandido)

While they started off as a seemingly thrown together pairing, Brody King and Bandido have truly excelled as a tag team, as well as in a trio alongside ‘Hangman’ Adam Page.

With reigns as AEW World Tag Team and Trios Champions under their belt it’s hard to say how much longer the pair’s allegiance will continue, particularly with King’s former tag team partner Buddy Matthews expected to be making his own return to action soon.

King turning on Bandido in order to re-align with Matthews would make for a nice surprise moment, and could lead to Bandido finding himself a new partner to take on the Hounds of Hell.

Alternatively, Bandido could put his over 520 day ROH World Championship reign on the line against King in a one-on-one grudge match, with King certainly being a fine candidate to end his run.

The Opps

While more of a faction than a tag team, The Opps have struggled to maintain a prominent spot in AEW in the absence of their leader Samoa Joe.

With Joe potentially nearing a return however, their fortunes could potentially turn around; although there is another potential roadblock to The Opps’ rebuild: Anthony Bowens’ potential AEW departure.

Bowens’ AEW deal is reportedly nearing its end in October and it’s unclear whether the former AEW Tag Team Champion will be re-signing, or whether he will be heading towards free agency.

With WWE reportedly interested in his signature, Bowens may fancy a fresh start, leaving The Opps with Samoa Joe, HOOK, Katsuyori Shibata and the newly recruited Action Andretti behind. While there’s certainly enough bodies to continue, Joe may instead decide to scrap the group and start again, potentially as a babyface rather than a heel.

Will Ospreay & Callum Newman

Not necessarily a solidified tag team in AEW, but Callum Newman and Will Ospreay are brothers in arms and have known each other for a decade.

While Newman and the rest of the United Empire supported Ospreay in his AEW World Title win, it’ll be interesting to see whether the two sides can co-exist now that The Aerial Assassin’ has the top spot in All Elite Wrestling.

Ospreay’s relationship with the Death Riders led to some friction between Ospreay and Newman over the summer, and now that Will and Jon Moxley are seemingly on good terms again, perhaps those old issues could rise up again, leading to Newman turning on his mentor.

Ospreay vs. Newman for the AEW World Title could certainly be a big match if built right, whether in AEW or NJPW, so it’ll be interesting to see if that’s a route AEW go down.
