Coming off the heels of WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event, Cody Rhodes has hit a cross roads in his career.

After once again not pulling the trigger in a key matchup, there are questions surrounding what is next for “The American Nightmare.”

From going after the Undisputed WWE Championship again to finishing his rivalry with Randy Orton, there are variety of different directions for Rhodes to go down moving forward.

Here are some potential future plans for Cody Rhodes.

Finally punt kick Randy Orton

At WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event, Randy Orton defeated Cody Rhodes.

At the tail end of the bout, Rhodes had Orton in position to hit the punt kick, but he hesitated and led to his loss in the match.

This has put Cody in the spotlight after once again not pulling the trigger against one of his former mentors like he did against John Cena last year.

After failing to do so in Atlanta, this rivalry should come to a close with Cody Rhodes finally delivering a punt kick to Randy Orton once and for all.

Money In The Bank

On Saturday, October 10, WWE will present the Money In The Bank 2026 premium live event in New Orleans.

After losing the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions 2026, Rhodes has been desperate to get back to the top of SmackDown. While he got an opportunity at WWE SummerSlam 2026, Randy Orton returned to cost him the title.

All the way back in 2013, Rhodes had one of his first breakout moments when he came inches away from winning the Money In The Bank that year.

Now, Cody Rhodes may have to enter the Men’s Money In The Bank Ladder Match to get a guaranteed title shot at any time he wants.

Challenge Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship

At WWE Night of Champions 2026, Sami Zayn defeated Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER to win the Undisputed WWE Championship.

This win came as a result of Zayn pinning Rhodes to become the champion for the first time.

Despite being scheduled to face Zayn in a rematch on the July 6 WWE Raw, GUNTHER attacked Rhodes before he could get to the bout.

Now, Zayn is a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion, which could open the door for Cody to challenge him sooner rather than later.

Heel turn

This seems to be the option that most fans want to see for Cody Rhodes.

Rhodes turning heel has been teased for the better part of the past year in different rivalries.

While it might be difficult to get fans to boo him, Rhodes becoming a top heel seems to be the most intriguing direction for “The American Nightmare” to go down in the near future.

With the chance to feud with CM Punk, Kevin Owens and Trick Williams, there is a lot of potential for Cody Rhodes to become the biggest heel in WWE for years to come.
