One element of WWE that can be directly compared to New Japan Pro Wrestling is the idea of maintaining an entertaining and lucrative cruiserweight division.
The two promotions’ approaches to such a task have a number of similarities, mostly involving the weight limit and move sets of their competitors. However, while WWE‘s presentation of the cruiserweights has floundered since its inception in 2016, New Japan Pro Wrestling‘s junior heavyweight division has seen increased success in recent years.
It is the stark differences between each version that fuels one promotion’s success and the other’s abject failure, a divide worth examining and dissecting.
