For the first time in two years, Damian Priest is a heel in WWE after turning his back on tag team parter R-Truth on the September 11 SmackDown.
After plateauing as a babyface, this presents the former World Heavyweight Champion with a whole host of exciting plans that he wouldn’t have engaged in whilst playing a fan favorite.
Here are three potential routes forward for Damian Priest after his WWE SmackDown heel turn.
R-Truth Feud
Given that R-Truth was the victim of Damian Priest’s turn to the dark side, the likeliest first piece of business WWE may want to pursue is a singles feud between the two former WWE Tag Team Champions.
It wouldn’t have to be an extended program that spans months, but giving Priest a few wins over Truth would help him build some momentum and wrap up their story together which spans years at this point.
Given how popular Truth is with the fans, it would be a missed opportunity for WWE if their feud wasn’t continued at least for a few weeks. Priest purposely targeting Truth, and perhaps even putting him on the shelf for an extended period of time would be a great way to solidify his heel run and totally turn the fans against him.
El Grande Americano AAA Mega Champion Challenger After TripleMania 34
At the time of writing, Dominik Mysterio still holds the AAA Mega Championship, but will defend the gold this Sunday in Mexico against El Grande Americano at TripleMania 34 Night Two.
Americano has been positioned as the top babyface in AAA all year, and has been riding a solid wave of momentum since his acclaimed Mask vs. Mask Match win over Chad Gable at AAA Noche de Los Grandes. With Night One of TripleMania ending on a dour note, there’s no way WWE are not sending the Mexico City fans home happy on Sunday, so Americano should finally win the big one and dethrone ‘Dirty Dom’ for the Mega Championship.
While Mysterio very well could seek to win back his title afterwards, it would be exciting to see someone else step up and challenge Americano post-TripleMania.
Damian Priest recently made his debut in AAA at Ola De Calor on August 30, and one would think WWE have more plans to feature him in Mexico going forward. Now playing a monster heel, Priest would provide a real threat to Americano’s reign as Mega Champion and the feud could help carry the promotion heading into the fall months.
Drafted To WWE Raw, Reunites With The Judgment Day
While Damian Priest’s motivation for his heel turn seemed to be a desire to resume his singles career, there’s no denying that his most successful run in WWE came when he was a part of a group.
Priest’s time in The Judgment Day led to him winning his first World Heavyweight Championship, but since splitting from the group, both he and his former faction haven’t reached the same heights.
With Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh treated like comedy acts, Priest returning to the group could help them regain some legitimacy and prevent them from further embarrassment.
Even if a Judgment Day reunion doesn’t happen, Priest moving back to Raw would have some real-life benefits, as his girlfriend Lola Vice is set to debut on the red brand this coming Monday in Mexico City (September 14).
