WWE/Marvel
Triple H has contributed a story for the upcoming Spider-Man #1000, and he’s far from the only WWE star to have put pen to comic paper.
Set for release on September 30, Spider-Man #1000 is a landmark issue for the Marvel Comics webcrawler, bringing together a number or writers and artists from across the character’s legendary run.
Marvel Comics announced the creative line-up for the upcoming issue, described as “the Biggest Issue in Spider-History”, with WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque among those names:
“The Big Night” by Triple H and Ed McGuinness spins an original Spidey tale from the WWE Hall of Famer!
While this may be the first time Triple H has written for Marvel Comics, he previously appeared as Jarko Grimwood in the 2004 Blade: Trinity movie.
Triple H isn’t the first WWE star to have contributed to the comic book world, however:
CM Punk
A lifelong comic book fan, CM Punk contributed to Thor Annual #1 in 2015, teaming with Rob Guillory to tell the tale of the God of Thunder proving himself worthy of Mjolnir by participating in a drinking competition.
Thor wouldn’t be the only character to benefit from Punk’s writing, with the 2015 Drax series also seeing the star on writing duties.
All this was done, of course, after CM Punk had parted ways with WWE and long before he would debut in AEW.
The star has previously indicated that he would be interested in playing The Punisher, with Jon Bernthal bringing to the character to the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Mick Foley
Now a name in AEW, Mick Foley penned issues of the WWE Superstars comic book that ran for twelve issues between December 2013 and February 2015.
Set in an alternative universe, Titan City served as the home of a plethora of WWE stars, with crime and corruption at the heart of the storytelling. The final arc saw WWE Legends collide with their modern-day (at the time) counterparts in an epic battle.
Foley is a multi-time New York Times bestselling author who has written a number of autobiographies, children’s books, and modern fiction.
The New Day
Kofi & Austin Creed may now be under AEW contract as The New Level, but Kingston, the former Xavier Woods and Big E contributed to the comic book world as WWE stars.
Back in July 2021, the trio penned WWE: The New Day: Power of Positivity, a story that recounted “the untold story” of the multi-time Tag Team Champions for Boom! Studios.
Diesel
Kevin Nash, known to WWE fans as Diesel, would write Nash for Image Comics back in 1999, a post-apocalyptic series co-written with Marat Mychaels that would be set in the futuristic year of 2023.
Nash would be the hero of the piece, fighting a secret cabal called Citadel that had wiped out most of humanity through a virus.
The Ultimate Warrior
1996 saw two things for The Ultimate Warrior: a return to WWE at WrestleMania 12 with a squash victory over Hunter Hearst Helmsley (not yet Triple H) and a self-published comic book series that lasted just five issues.
Published by his own Ultimate Creations, Warrior was bizarre, to say the least, from its very introduction to the final page of the last issue:
“Destrucity: In its design, Destrucity represents a constellation existing in the heavens which symbolizes the ‘Eight Disciplines’ by which Warriors choose to live their lives. Brought to existence by the destinies of those willing to die for their Beliefs, brought to exist as a place where people live by Belief in the evolution of their Higher Selves — constantly evolving toward a completion of their chosen destiny — all with strength in the denial of ‘System Beliefs’ — the very Beliefs that amplify differences in and create rights, wrongs, judgments, and opinions of people, places, and things.”
A Crossover Match Made In Heaven
It’ll come as little surprise that many stars, be they in WWE, AEW, signed to other companies or on the independent wrestling scene, are comic books fans.
For a select few, the opportunity to write a story or appear in a live-action movie/series is no doubt a dream come true. It’s also something that might happen more frequently for top stars as the likes of Marvel and DC look for that next crossover pop to their numbers.
