CM Punk has shared his first comments following his Undisputed WWE Championship loss on SmackDown, commenting on his in-ring future.
Punk put his title on the line on the September 11 show in Mexico City against Sami Zayn, the man who he previously defeated to become champion.
Sami Zayn ultimately left the arena with the gold, pinning Punk following interference from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and Kevin Owens.
With CM Punk’s title reign coming to an end on its 67th day, the now-former champion took to his Instagram story to confirm that he didn’t plan this as a meme reference for Je’Von Evans.
Punk shared a heartfelt message, indicating that he will remain on WWE TV following his championship loss and expressing gratitude that he gets to come to work.
He wrote:
“I lost. 67 day undisputed title run. At 47. I’d like to say I did it on purpose for my boy (Je’Von Evans) but nobody wants to lose.
Here’s the thing: Winners lose way more than losers do. I don’t have to try again. I get to try again. I didn’t have to come to Mexico. I don’t HAVE to do house shows. I get to. I get to wrestle in front of the best fans in the world in Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City.
I don’t have to get the title back. I get to try to get the title back. I don’t HAVE to come to work. I GET TO COME TO WORK. So I’ll see you all in Corpus Christi. I will get MY title back. You don’t have to watch. You get to.”
As referenced above, Punk’s next WWE TV appearance will be during next Friday’s (September 18) SmackDown episode, which will emanate from the Hilliard Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Punk became champion on the July 6 Raw episode in Chicago, defeating Sami Zayn in his first match since losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42.
He defended the gold against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, Kevin Owens on the August 21 SmackDown episode, and Johnny Gargano on the September 4 show, ahead of losing the gold back to Zayn.
With Punk having ended Zayn’s first WWE world title reign after just nine days, many fans had called for Sami to eventually win the gold back.
It will be interesting to see how WWE will prevent Sami Zayn now that he’s a two-time champion, in a reign which will almost definitely be longer than his first.
