Penta is guaranteed a championship match after winning WWE Money in the Bank, but things might not go the way fans are expecting.
The former Intercontinental Champion was the winner of the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match on Saturday, where he got the better of CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams.
Winning the Money in the Bank briefcase means Penta can cash-in for a championship match of his choosing whenever he wants at any time in the next year.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, the Money in the Bank winner cashes in to become either WWE Champion or World Heavyweight Champion – the two top titles in the entire company.
However, we’ve also seen evidence of that not always being the case, whether that’s because the cash-in is unsuccessful, or because the Money in the Bank holder decides to cash-in on a different title, like Austin Theory with the United States Championship a few years ago… which was actually an unsuccessful cash-in too.
The question is, does WWE really see Penta as either a World Champion or WWE Champion in the coming 12 months, or is there something different planned?
There are a few different options to keep in mind…
The AAA Mega Championship
WWE has spent the past year bigging up its newly acquired AAA promotion in Mexico, with The Undertaker and Jeremy Borash leading the direction of the product creatively.
WWE could look to really drive home the importance of AAA as one of its brands by having Penta cash-in his Money in the Bank contract to win the Mega Championship.
Already over huge in Mexico, the move would no doubt get a massive reaction from the fans there and would make Penta the top star on the show.
However, with El Grande Americano the current champion and one of the biggest stars in wrestling among those fans right now, Penta cashing in – if it was to happen – would likely have to wait until a heel like Dominik Mysterio, Omos, or a member of Los Perros Del Mal became champion.
A Lucha Bros reunion
There is another route WWE could go with Penta’s Money in the Bank contact, and it’s one we’ve never seen before – cashing in on a tag team championship.
Fans have long been awaiting the reunion of the Lucha Bros – Penta and his younger brother Rey Fenix – which was the original plan for their WWE arrivals but ended up being delayed due to the success of Penta in particular, with Fenix now starting to thrive in his own right as well.
Penta wanting to share his accomplishment with his brother and go after one of the tag titles together is a possibility for sure.
However, the downside of this is that WWE has done absolutely nothing of late to make the tag team division or its championships seem important, which would lead to a lot of criticism if this were to actually happen.
The most likely outcome
All in all, if you had to put money on it, you’d probably still say at this point that WWE would go the traditional route and Penta will end up as either World Heavyweight Champion or WWE Champion some time in the next year.
Penta has drawn praise from not only WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, but also company President Nick Khan and others in TKO, who are more interested in the business side of things, which shows that Penta isn’t just an exciting talent for fans to get behind, but he’s actually making the company plenty of money as well.
The World Title direction in the coming months seems pretty clear – Roman Reigns dropping the title to Oba Femi – so perhaps it’ll be the WWE Title, currently held by Sami Zayn, that Penta will target.
He would join a very exclusive club of the very top talent who have held the current version of the WWE Championship, with Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, John Cena, Drew McIntyre, Sami Zayn and CM Punk being the only other men who have held it.
He could even cash-in some time in the next few weeks if WWE ends up moving Crown Jewel out of Saudi Arabia, setting up a rematch against Reigns for this year’s Crown Jewel Championship.
