WWE has a tag team problem, the reunited Lucha Brothers could save the division

The WWE tag team division has been in a dire state for months now, but can Penta and Rey Fenix recombined to turn things back around?

In 2025, the WWE tag scene, especially on SmackDown, looked really promising. Let’s take a look at the six-team SummerSlam ladder match from last year and the teams featured in it.

That bout was made up of Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy, Andrade & Rey Fenix, DIY, the Motor City Machine Guns, the Street Profits and Fraxiom.

Six teams who are all exciting in their own rights, but now here we are a year later, and only two of them are still intact in WWE – the Street Profits and Fraxiom.

Fraxiom are still the bright spark

The Profits are absent right now, and while they’re always fun to watch, they’ve now been together and really doing the same thing for nearly 10 years. It feels like it’s time for something new.

Meanwhile, Fraxiom have everything to be one of the most exciting acts on the main roster, tag team or otherwise, but WWE just hasn’t given them that chance – despite having bangers every time they do get the chance to have a match on SmackDown, they’re never given the chance to push on afterwards.

Despite that, they’re still the bright spark in the division. They just don’t have anyone around them. The Miz and Kit Wilson? The War Raiders? The MFTs? Not that they can’t have good matches, but they just don’t sound exciting in the current environment of things.

Los Garza are probably the closest thing, but they have the same problem on the WWE main roster – they’re at least getting a push with Los Perros Del Mal in AAA nowadays, which is actually where Fraxiom are getting most of their opportunities as well.

However, WWE does have a rocket launcher waiting in the wings to unleash into the tag division when it wants to, and that rocket launcher is the Lucha Brothers.

When will Penta & Rey Fenix finally reform their partnership?

Penta and Rey Fenix were supposed to join WWE as a team, but because AEW added injury time onto Fenix’s contract, he was stuck when Penta signed with WWE, and the company decided to use him on his own instead of just waiting for Fenix.

What WWE perhaps didn’t predict was just how much of a success Penta would be. He became ultra popular and ended up with an Intercontinental Championship reign and is now mixing it up around the World Heavyweight Title scene off the back of a successful Raw main event against Roman Reigns in Mexico.

Meanwhile, Fenix got off to a slower start, but since becoming AAA World Cruiserweight Champion, has been given more of a spotlight and has had consistently excellent matches across both AAA and SmackDown.

For over a year, WWE made sure that Penta and Fenix didn’t interact, but we’re now seeing them together more often, though not as a full-time duo.

It does seem like it’s the long-term plan to bring them together, and perhaps if Penta hits a bit of a ceiling with his singles run, that might be the point to unleash the Lucha Brothers and give the tag team division the boost that it needs.
