With their first encounter being well-received, Roman Reigns vs. Penta is a shoo-in for an eventual World Heavyweight Championship rematch.
The September 14 episode of WWE Raw saw Roman Reigns retain the World Heavyweight Championship in Mexico City.
Multiple reports emerged online that the backstage reaction to the main was positive, with fans broadly feeling the same way, despite Penta not unseating The OTC.
With Fightful indicating that a rematch isn’t currently in the plans, it was also noted that WWE felt they could revisit the rivalry, potentially leading a PLE headliner in the future.
Roman Reigns remains a part-time in-ring competitor in WWE, which limits when such a match could take place, but there are options:
The Retirement Match
Roman Reigns recently stated that he was “almost there” when it comes to be his own retirement, although wouldn’t set a date when he intends to hang up his boots. In comments made last year, Reigns would state that he is potentially looking to wrestling “another year or two max” after he finishes he contract.
The opportunity exists for WWE to catch lightning in a bottle once again, presenting Penta and Roman Reigns as the final match in The OTC’s career, with the World Heavyweight Championship changing hands. Imagine that taking place around Triplemania 35 in 2027, when WWE will likely bring Raw back to Mexico.
Wrestlepalooza
Roman Reigns vs. Penta II could make WWE Wrestlepalooza a must-watch show on December 12, with the event heading to Perth, Australia.
Putting the World Heavyweight Championship on the line in Australia doesn’t necessarily mean a title change, particularly with Bronson Reed having recently stated he “might mess around and beat Roman again“, having done so in a Street Fight match at Crown Jewel: Perth back in October of last year.
Perhaps Reed gets to compete in his home country elsewhere on the card, going on to interfere in the main event between Penta and Reigns, setting himself up for a feud with the Mexican star to give breathing room to a round three.
The Road To WrestleMania 43
Penta has competed in two men’s Royal Rumble matches in consecutive years, with The Bloodline family members winning both. Jey Uso won in 2025, with Roman Reigns victorious this year.
Entering the 2027 men’s Royal Rumble match and winning for the first time in his career would set up Penta for a WWE championship match, with the World Heavyweight Championship being a natural fit for the star, particularly if Roman Reigns still has it.
Fast forward to April next year and WrestleMania 43 takes place in Saudi Arabia, with the World Heavyweight Championship match likely to be in the main event of either Night 1 or 2.
Wait And See
WWE higher-ups know that they have a barn burner of a match on the cards for whenever they want to deliver it and will no doubt pick the best time and location to do it.
A feud brewing between the pair would be an ideal run-up, with Penta facing various obstacles as he attempts to face Reigns once more, particularly given the limited number of in-ring dates for the leader of The Bloodline.
That chase would only build anticipation, as would see Penta rise through the ranks until Reigns has no choice but to face him one-on-one once again.
