Title Throwback: WWE must bring back the Divas Championship

The SmackDown women’s roster and Chelsea Green have proven that fans still hold a special place in their hearts for the WWE Divas.

Although the passage of time has cast a negative light across the totality of the WWE Divas division, there remains a nostalgic soft spot for many fans.

Maybe it’s time for the WWE fandom to take a serious look at the current SmackDown women’s division and give these Divas a chance.

Reclaiming the Divas division

On the September 25 edition of SmackDown, there were a dozen female performers showcased with one common thread — each character is well thought out, well executed and their motivations are believable.

In turn, the way that they interact with one another is not only more believable but doesn’t take much suspension of disbelief to follow their storyline sagas both in the ring and outside of it.

Are some of the characters overtly sexy? Yes. Are they sometimes silly? Also, yes.

However, the difference in the presentation of the women in WWE today versus at the height of what people remember as the worst of the Divas era is remarkably different.

Take the trio of Fatal Influence for example — making an immediate impact on the main roster, all three have quickly captured fans’ attention as well as championship gold.

With Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid as the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions and Jacy Jayne having bested Tiffany Stratton to capture the United States Championship —their attire, their attitude and even their dance moves don’t come across as exploitative but rather, empowered.

Chelsea Green is the perfect WWE Champion

Bringing together the most delightful blend of serious in-ring talent and completely unserious character presentation, the over-the-top Chelsea Green is the perfect WWE Women’s Champion and ambassador for a brand new era of women in WWE.

Humble in her performances, Green has spent far more of her career making herself look goofy for the benefit of making other characters look strong than she has at the top of the division.

However, despite her current reign being her first as WWE Women’s Championship, her immense popularity amongst fans is undeniable.

With big crowd reactions for appearances on-screen by not only Green but Tiffany Stratton, Paige, Nikki Bella. Lash Legend, Charlotte Flair, Guilia, Blake Monroe, Candice LeRae and Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley & Lainey Reed) on just the September 25 edition of SmackDown — fan engagement is clear.

#GiveDivasAChance again

While the “#GiveDivasAChance” hashtag caught fire on social media a decade ago and the WWE Women’s Evolution that followed revolutionized the industry — there are still plenty of fans that adore the character driven antics of Divas era.

With the return of pioneers like AJ Lee, Paige and The Bella Twins (Nikki and Brie Bella) returning to the women’s division, there has been renewed opportunity for OG Divas to interface with the characters of today.

While there are light hearted catch-phrases and decided unserious characters easily accepted by the fan base from the male roster (see: current iteration of Solo Sikoa), the women’s division shouldn’t be devoid of joy or whimsy because of the sins of the past.

The WWE SmackDown women’s roster is doing an exceptional job at balancing the fun, silly and entertaining side of professional wrestling with technical prowess needed to make in-ring action look effortless.

Which makes the solution to the “Interim” issue abundantly clear — while Rhea Ripley might technically remain the WWE Women’s Champion, when she returns the solution is obvious.

WWE needs to bring back the Divas Championship and turn Green loose with her own brand new top title, full of delicious nostalgia, comedy and fabulousness.
