Current ‘Free Agents’ in WWE updated; Who is no longer a roaming star?

There’s been an update to the ‘free agents’ in WWE with not so many names attached to the list of stars who can float between brands.

Up until recently, there were seven stars who were classed as ‘free agents‘, able to appear on WWE Raw, SmackDown or NXT.

Now that list has been updated, with the official WWE roster page confirming that only five stars are currently ‘free agents’.

At the time of writing, the current list comprises:

AJ Lee

Having returned on WWE SmackDown in September of last year, AJ Lee hasn’t competed since losing the Women’s Intercontinental Championship to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 42 this April.

A recent interview with iHeart Women’s Sports, saw the absent WWE star address a potential return, stating “if there’s a story there”.

At the time of writing, there’s no indication as to when AJ Lee will make her return to screens.

Brie Bella

Making a return at this year’s Royal Rumble, Brie Bella is currently out of action, having suffered an injury during her Women’s Tag Team Championship defense at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July. That match would see The Bella Twins turn on Paige.

The Bellas were moved to the ‘free agent’ section of the roster page, having previously been assigned to WWE Raw.

Danhausen

Debuting at this year’s Elimination Chamber, Danhausen has featured in some capacity on Raw, SmackDown and NXT, although his in-ring action has mostly been kept to the blue brand and PLEs.

Recently, Danhausen has been ingratiating himself to SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis and may be heading into a program with a less-than-willing GUNTHER.

Nikki Bella

Perhaps unsurprising given that The Bella Twins have long been a unit in WWE, Nikki Bella is also a ‘free agent’.

While Brie Bella may be sidelined, her twin sister has continued to be a thorn in the side of Paige, recently defeating the star on WWE SmackDown.

Omos

A ‘free agent’, Omos has recently sided with Dominik Mysterio and El Hijo Del Vikingo in AAA, forming El Ojo, a stable managed by Dorian Roldan.

Teaming with Mysterio and JD McDonagh at Worlds Collide on September 26 and facing CM Punk, Rey Mysterio & El Grande Americano, Omos has recently indicated that he would be open to joining Judgment Day should an invite come his way.

So, Who Is No Longer A Free Agent?

That’s it, for now. The five names who could turn up on WWE Raw, SmackDown or NXT. But, what of the stars who are no longer part of the list?

Paige has moved to SmackDown, with her entry on the WWE roster page reflecting that shift.

Oba Femi is officially listed as a WWE Raw star, which is a move that hasn’t impressed Paul Heyman.

Is Being A ‘Free Agent’ That Big Of A Deal?

It’s not unusual for WWE Raw stars to occasionally pop up on SmackDown, and vice versa, largely dependent on creative direction at the time.

Arguably, the five members of the ‘free agent’ list have such value to WWE that making them formally available on Raw, SmackDown, or NXT can make it easier to plan a use for them, instead of potentially negotiating for their services in the writers’ room. That said, AJ Lee is in a position where her availability is dictated by an appropriate story for the star, suggesting an element of control in how she is used that is unlikely to be there for others on the list.
