Penta is the winner of the men’s Money in the Bank briefcase, giving him an open opportunity at a WWE championship in the future.

The October 10 Premium Live Event saw Penta claim the men’s Money in the Bank briefcase in a match that also featured CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, and Trick Williams.

A past report has resurfaced that indicates how Penta came to be Mr. Money in the Bank, citing the match that changed his fortunes:

A top Mexican star debuts in WWE

Off the back of a run in AEW that started back in 2019, January of last year saw Penta debut in WWE, with the star going on to become Intercontinental Champion.

There was little doubt that Penta had the tools to be a major star in WWE, with an Intercontinental Championship reign so early in his run being an indication of that faith.

The top title for a top star

While it isn’t an impossibility for a relatively new star to the world of WWE to claim a top title, it is still a rarity.

With Penta, he is yet to hold a world championship in WWE, but his match against Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship was a turning point for his fortunes.

Back in September, Fightful noted that “Penta is now viewed by several within WWE creative as a heavy favorite to win Money in the Bank”.

The report goes on to note that it was a plan that had developed after SummerSlam, specifically stating, “the reaction to Penta vs. Roman Reigns in Mexico City may have changed things, including discussion of a potential rematch.”

Penta in the men’s WWE Money in the Bank ladder match

Penta’s inclusion in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match came as a replacement for Solo Sikoa, who had been abducted by the 946 before the qualifying match.

It would be Penta who would win the qualifier, stamping his ticket to the ladder match itself, with all this happening the week after he faced Reigns.

Rematch with Reigns

The reaction to Reigns vs. Penta, which scored a 4.75-star rating in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, was such that a rematch is something that WWE have in their back pocket.

When it comes to cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase, post-show comments would see Penta hint at a “surprise” to come, although he did not go into much detail beyond sharing a belief that a world championship reign is in his future.

Describing the briefcase as “the best key in the world”, Penta would reflect on Reigns as the best, but warn the WWE champions to “watch your back”.

The changing landscape of WWE

In comments made after Money in the Bank, Triple H would reflect on the changing landscape of WWE.

Addressing Penta as Mr Money in the Bank, the Chief Content Officer would note that the match against Reigns had “lit a fire under Penta that (he) hasn’t seen for a long time in somebody”.

While it’s too early to say whether Penta will target Reigns again or go after Sami Zayn as Undisputed WWE Champion, it currently appears that the Mexican star is rising once again.
