WWE Raw Preview, July 23, 2018 – Stephanie McMahon’s Historic Announcement

Who like announcements? And who like huge things?

If you answered “I do” to both of those, I have some very good news for you.

As announced by WWE’s Twitter account last week, the matriarch of the company, Stephanie McMahon, will be making an appearance in her rarely seen babyface role to make an historic announcement.

But what could this announcement be?

Well, I think there are three main contenders, so below I have unpacked all the possibilities, and you’ll just have to wait until this evening to find out how wrong I am.

Women’s tag team titles

Probably the most likely of the three. A women’s tag division is something that many have speculated about for months, particularly as pretty much the entire women’s division is made up of potential tag teams.

The IIconics, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, The Riott Squad, Carmella and James Ellsworth (yes, I know), Bayley and Sasha Banks, Nia Jax and Natalya, Alexa Bliss and Mickie James, Lana and Naomi, Becky Lynch and Charlotte…Asuka and Ronda can just beat everyone up on their own.

That’s a hell of a lot of potential tag teams, and you can see the thinking behind it.

At most, there’s usually only one women’s story line at one time on each show, so injecting some tag belts into the mix would certainly stir up some more feuds. There would have to be some sort of inter-brand agreement, meaning the belts can be held on both Raw and SmackDown Live, but that shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

Furthermore, we reported recently that pictures of potential tag belts had been leaked, so it could all be adding up.

An all-female PPV

Again, this is something that many have speculated over, as it seems like something WWE would want to do as part of the “women’s revolution”.

What an event like this would do is actually give what is a very talented division (mostly) a chance to have matches longer than five minutes, and would make people see the division as a full-time player in WWE.

The only issue that I can see arising from this is that WWE are going to have to think of a new name for a PPV, so brace yourself for something horrible.

How about “WrestleWomania“?

Ronda and Alexa to main event SummerSlam

The least likely of the trio, particularly as there’s the little issue of SummerSlam probably being Brock Lesnar’s final WWE match for quite some time.

Ronda definitely has the ability to headline one of WWE’s big five, so I still wouldn’t be surprised if this was the announcement, but why announce it?

Surely it’s more special if they don’t announce this sort of thing, as otherwise it just makes it look like you’re trying too hard to promote women’s wrestling, when it should be a more natural thing that just happens.

The Rest

  • Roman Reigns faces Bobby Lashley…again…to see who will face Brock at SummerSlam. Expect a non-finish as all rumours point towards a triple threat.
  • The B-Team will defend their tag titles in a rematch against the Deleters of Worlds. A loss here and Matt and Bray may as well give up.
  • Will Bayley and Sasha Banks kiss? Seriously, there’s been a lot of speculation of a potential “lesbian story line” with these two. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility.
  • Ronda will probably turn up again and scare Alexa.
