After an eventful weekend in Mexico and South America, WWE will soon be turning their attention towards the October 10 Money in the Bank 2026 premium live event in New Orleans.
At the time of writing only two stars have qualified for the Men’s and Women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches, and no other matches have been announced for the rest of the card.
With spots in the ladder matches at a premium and WWE’s championship plans shifting and changing over the weekend, some top names may find themselves left out of the company’s plans for the Money in the Bank event.
Here are two top stars who could miss Money in the Bank.
CM Punk
Setting the tone for this past weekend was the main event of the September 11 episode of WWE SmackDown, which saw CM Punk lose his Undisputed WWE Championship to Sami Zayn in dramatic fashion.
Capitalizing on some deliberate assistance from Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae and not some inadvertent help from Kevin Owens, Zayn was able to dethrone Punk and begin his second reign with the Undisputed WWE Title. Zayn will be hoping that this run lasts a lot longer than nine days, but it may not be a Punk rematch he has to be on guard for.
Before Zayn had won the gold, Randy Orton declared that he would be coming for whoever left Mexico City as Undisputed WWE Champion, while Johnny Gargano forced Zayn to promise him that he would get the first shot at the title should Sami defeat Punk.
Punk very well could enter the arena and attempt to get what would be a justified rematch for the WWE Title. However, it also wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the ‘Best in the World’ take a short break from the title and pursue someone like Kevin Owens instead, given the role he played in him losing his gold on Friday.
Cody Rhodes
After failing to pull the trigger and punt kick Randy Orton’s head off at Sunday Night’s Main Event, Cody Rhodes appears to be back to the drawing board in WWE.
Fans are frustrated with his character after yet another missed opportunity to show his ruthless streak, and for now, it appears as if Randy Orton will be moving past Rhodes and into the Undisputed WWE Title picture.
Unless Rhodes qualifies for the Money in the Bank match or finishes off his trilogy with Orton in New Orleans, it’s hard to see a logical spot for him on the card.
WWE may feel like a break from TV is the best option for ‘The American Nightmare’ right now given the negativity towards him, and in storyline, his loss to Orton – and the mental toll his indecision would likely have on him afterwards – is a valid enough reason for Cody to take a step back in WWE.
