6 Big Takeaways From WWE SmackDown

If you didn’t watch WWE SmackDown on Fox, here are the big stories from the May 29, 2020 Edition of SmackDown:

Jeff Hardy arrested for running over Elias with a rental car.

To kick off the show, all hell broke loose. Elias was being treated to by EMTs. A cop was investigating the crime scene and found the rental car receipt with Hardy’s name. Later, Hardy was found nearby in the bushes. He stunk like alcohol and the cops arrested him.

This meant half the IC Title Tournament was missing. Adam Pearce declared a battle royal would determine a replacement for Jeff Hardy. AJ Styles declined a replacement and got a bye into the finals.

Sheamus replaces Hardy in Intercontinental Title after winning Battle Royal

We got a 10 man battle royal featuring Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus, Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura, Shorty G, Gran Metallik, Lince Dorado, Jey Uso, and Drew Gulak. Corbin eliminates Lucha House Party, Drew Gulak, and Dolph Ziggler.

Then Jey Uso superkicks Corbin out of the ring. Shorty G eliminates Cesaro and Nakamura. Cesaro illegally eliminates Shorty G. This set up story between Shorty G and Cesaro.

Eventually, Sheamus wins. He goes on to face Daniel Bryan in the semifinals of the tournament.

Sonya Deville doesn’t like Blondes

Sonya Deville and Lacey Evans got into a twitter battle this week. Basically, Sonya wants to rid WWE of any blondes. She and Lacey do battle in very intense match. However, the match ends in a double count-out.

Lacey wants to keep fighting, but Sonya says only on her terms. Looks like we’re getting a Sonya and Lacey program to follow up to Sonya/Mandy.

Sonya is quickly moving up the ranks of the women’s division. She seems to be slowly being built up as the next contender for Bayley. I think it might take a couple of months, but she is looking better and better each week.

Banks and Bayley’s inevitable feud teases continue

After a dreadful Moment of Bliss, Bayley and Banks interrupt and Banks beats Bliss in a quick singles match. Bayley set up the match even though Banks wasn’t dressed to wrestle.

It looks like Bayley keeps throwing Banks to the wolves. At some point, she’ll have enough and want that title. Rumors say it will happen at SummerSlam.

Matt Riddle is Officially a SmackDown Superstar:

Tonight, after a wonderful Otis and Mandy segment, Kurt Angle read a promo introducing SmackDown’s newest star, Matt Riddle. WWE basically was using Angle a legit athlete and wrestler to introduce Matt Riddle.

It seems WWE could be pushing Riddle as a legit athlete. Of course, the promo was then followed by a video package.

The video package put over the fact that Riddle was a laid back guy who gets serious when he needs too. SmackDown is quickly becoming one of the best rosters in WWE.

Daniel Bryan And AJ Styles Are In the Finals of the Intercontinental Title Tournament.

AJ Styles got a bye by refusing to take a replacement after Elias was injured. Daniel Bryan wanted a match. He got one.

Sheamus moved on and put on a really good main event. In the end, Jeff Hardy managed to find his way back from being arrested and distract Sheamus.  Daniel Bryan hits a running knee and gets the win.

This means AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan will be facing off to determine the number 1 contender. This match is set for next Friday night. AJ vs. Bryan. Yet, we’re getting the greatest wrestling match ever a few nights later.  Hmm…
