An AEW star who has been absent from weekly programming for over a year has clarified the reason for his hiatus, and commented on his future goals with the company.
Former boxer Anthony Ogogo signed with AEW in 2019, with his first angle coming in the spring of 2021 with Cody Rhodes, ahead of their match at that year’s Double or Nothing event.
While Ogogo at one time was a regular on Dark and Dark Elevation, the British star hasn’t wrestled for AEW in over a year.
While he hasn’t competed in an AEW ring since August 2022, Ogogo did appear as a panelist at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium, and notably featured in a pre-show segment alongside Paul Wight and Grado.
Following Ogogo’s recent re-emergence, he spoke with Metro, revealing that he has been dealing with visa issues and a lost passport after sending it to the UK to be renewed.
While unable to appear for AEW, Ogogo has been working on outside-projects in order to raise his stock for when he does make his return, something he fully intends to do.
Ogogo explained:
“I’m doing different things to build my brand so when I do get the phone call to come back, I’m going back bigger, better, the prestige behind me.
“All you can do is control things you can control, and I’m doing what I can do.”
As far as his goals for when he does make his return are concerned, Ogogo is aiming high, stating his intention to make history in AEW and break precedents.
“I wanna be world champion, I wanna be the first British world champion, the first Black world champion, this and that.
“I’m gonna leave my mark. I chose wrestling because it ticks other boxes.”
According to a report last month from Fightful Select, Ogogo reportedly re-signed with AEW on a two-year deal at the end of 2022 or early 2023, keeping him in the company until early 2025.
