AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla has commented on whether there’s “competition” between herself and WWE star GUNTHER.

Thekla and two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER have both reached the top of their promotions and are both originally from Vienna, Austria.

Speaking with TMZ, Thekla was asked whether she and GUNTHER are in “competition” with one another over being the top Austrian in wrestling, and how their statuses in AEW and WWE have helped the wrestling scene overall in their home country.

She said:

“I think that within Austria the scene has been thriving, from what I’ve heard. Probably due to people like myself and also another gentleman over in WWE called WALTER/GUNTHER.

“I think, personally, it is remarkable that two of wrestling’s biggest stars come from the same town – small town, two million people, where not much is going on, or was going on at least when I was wrestling there and coming up.

“I’m happy to represent the little place I’m from. It’s cool to have people see that there is talent in Vienna.

“I don’t think we’re in competition at all. He is so, so, so much better at some stuff than I am. And he’s very real about his style too. There’s really nothing bad I could say about what he’s doing. He’s very outstanding.

“I’m just playing a game that’s very different from anybody’s game. I don’t know who you could actually compare me to. Not GUNTHER, that’s for sure.”

This weekend, both Thekla and GUNTHER will be involved in World Title matches in their companies.

At AEW Forbidden Door, Thekla defends the AEW Women’s World Championship against STARDOM’s Starlight Kid.

Meanwhile, GUNTHER is in a three-way match for the Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn and defending champion Cody Rhodes.

Thekla is almost guaranteed to retain her title, especially with how glowingly Tony Khan talks about her, while the WWE Title match seems a bit more open and any of the three could end up winning.
