AEW Return To International Location A ‘Virtual Certainty’ AEW

A return to an international location for AEW is a ‘virtual certainty’ according to company owner Tony Khan.

AEW Grand Slam Mexico marked the company’s debut in the country on June 18, on a show that saw Mercedes Mone become CMLL World Women’s Champion.

With the show now in the history books, Tony Khan has revealed that it was ‘the most watched AEW on cable in nearly a year’ and confirmed a return to Mexico is likely.

Speaking on the Battleground Podcast, Khan went into detail on the performance of AEW Grand Slam Mexico, saying:

“It was the most watched episode of AEW since last year, and that was before the simulcast.

“So you know, based on our TBS data, this was the most watched AEW show on cable in nearly a year, and in a lot of the key demographics, most watched AEW show in over a year.

“…When you factor in the streaming viewership, I think this was the most watched AEW program in a long time.”

As for a return to Mexico, Khan would express his belief that it is likely to happen, thanks to the partnership between AEW and CMLL, explaining:

“We’ve never seen an American wrestling promotion go to Mexico and work with CMLL and be invited to run a show, let alone a major TV show… out of Arena Mexico.

““It was a huge success, and very excited to go do it again… It’s almost a virtual certainty we’re going to have a return to Mexico.”

The partnership between AEW and CMLL was announced towards the end of 2023, with later reported stating that the Mexico-based promotion was “thrilled” by their relationship.
