Top AEW Name Prefers Quarterly Pay-Per-Views Over Monthly AEW

A top AEW name says he prefers quarterly pay-per-views over monthly ones.

In 2022, All Elite Wrestling introduced a fifth pay-per-view to their traditional schedule with AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. Prior to this, the company only ran four major events per year.

AEW added a sixth pay-per-view to their schedule with AEW All In London from Wembley Stadium in August, and now will add a seventh show with the upcoming AEW WrestleDream on October 1.

As previously reported, recent reports indicate that the company will hold its eighth major event of 2023 on December 29 and moving to monthly pay-per-views in 2024.

On the latest episode of the Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross admitted that he prefers the quarterly pay-per-view schedule because it allows for promotions to build their storylines. He said:

“I liked the old format because it gave companies, whoever they were, opportunities to build and to build the anticipation for that pay-per-view and that investment that the fans need to make to enjoy it, you gotta buy it.”

“I think the economy dictates a lot of that. You got to have a great attraction. Attractions sell pay-per-views, Conrad. It’s that simple.”

“It’s not the second match on the card, third match, it’s what’s on the poster so to speak. I like the fact that at one time, we were able to build stories and strengthen them so that there is more of a desire to buy and to watch.”

“You got to change with the times, I get that, and I have no problem with that either. I just think the storytelling realm of pro wrestling, we’re better off with the opportunity to build.”

“It looks like you’re right, the trend is going to be that of monthlies. If you’re creative enough to build a good story for monthlies, more power to you because it creates more paydays.”

“I’m a big fan of building the story, or building the anticipation for the story type situation.”

So far announced for AEW WrestleDream, Bryan Danielson will face Zack Sabre Jr. in a dream match, and FTR will defend the AEW World Tag Team Championships against Aussie Open.

Also, Hangman Adam Page will go one-on-one with Swerve Strickland for the first time. For the full lineup for AEW WrestleDream, click here.
