AEW’s plans to replace an injured current champion have now been officially revealed, courtesy of a pair of announcements by Tony Khan.
After dropping the AEW TNT Championship to Kyle Fletcher on the July 31 episode of Collision, Dustin Rhodes shared the news that he was needing to undergo double knee replacement surgery.
With Rhodes’ surgery now complete, Tony Khan has now confirmed his plans to replace the veteran star on Ring of Honor, as he currently holds both the AEW World Tag Team Championships with Sammy Guevara and the AEW World Six-Man Tag Team Titles with Marshall & Ross Von Erich.
Posting a pair of announcements to Twitter, Tony Khan confirmed that both sets of titles will be defended at ROH Death Before Dishonor in Philadelphia tomorrow night (August 29).
For the ROH World Six Man Tag Team Championships, Sammy Guevara will be replacing Rhodes, as he and The Von Erichs defend the titles against Shane Taylor and The Infantry.
As for the ROH World Tag Team Titles, Sammy Guevara will be replacing Dustin with new a partner of his choosing to compete against The Outrunners at Friday’s event.
It has not yet known who Guevara’s new teammate will be, but we will provide any updates as they become available.
We wish Dustin Rhodes a safe and full recovery.
