There has been a big update on AEW’s plans for a highly anticipated upcoming pay-per-view event.
Ahead of AEW Big Business (March 13) Tony Khan made headlines when he posted a picture of himself alongside STARDOM President Taro Okada, who was in attendance in Boston for the show.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that this looks set to be the beginning of a new partnership between the two companies, one that looks set to have an impact on the third annual Forbidden Door event.
As well as STARDOM, Meltzer also revealed that CMLL will also play a role on the show for the first time, saying:
“There will be Stardom and CMLL wrestlers on the Forbidden Door show when they do that show in June.”
Meltzer then shared insight into the timing of the AEW/STARDOM partnership, something that seems to have rapidly developed since former President Rossy Ogawa’s departure in early February.
Meltzer continued:
“So (Taro Okada) came in and that kind of explains, again, when Tony Khan tweeted those tweets about Rossy Ogawa. It was definite loyalty to Stardom and Rossy Ogawa was quitting Stardom, so that’s what is going on there.”
As well as Forbidden Door, Meltzer also revealed that talent from STARDOM could also appear at ROH’s Supercard of Honor show on April 5, with AZM and Mina Shirakawa being mentioned specifically.
The date and location for Forbidden Door has yet to be announced officially by AEW, however, a recent report has suggested it will be held at New York City’s Arthur Ashe Stadium in June.
The venue has staged AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam for the past three years, but has yet to host a traditional pay-per-view.
We’ll keep you posted with any further updates.
