WWE/AEW
AEW President Tony Khan reportedly made an offer to buy WWE from Vince McMahon when the company was on sale in 2023.
When Vince McMahon orchestrated his return to WWE back in January 2023, he did so as a way to spearhead a sale of the company.
It was eventually announced on the morning of WrestleMania 39 Sunday in April 2023 that WWE had officially been sold to Endeavor, with the company forming TKO with the UFC.
Prior to the sale to Endeavor, there were a number of potential buyers being speculated, which included Liberty Media.
AEW’s Tony Khan Attempted To Purchase WWE
In a new update from POST Wrestling, the full story you can see here, WWE received three other offers to buy the company alongside Endeavor, who ended up winning the bidding.
The first was the aforementioned Liberty Media, the parent company of Formula One, with the second being a private equity firm named KKR.
The fourth bidder, however, was from a company called ‘Base 10’, which has now been confirmed to be a company backed by AEW President Tony Khan.
While Khan is not named specifically in the latest court filings, Base 10 and All Elite Wrestling are officially named, with the filing reading:
“Base 10 is the owner of All Elite Wrestling, a professional wrestling promotion that plainly would enjoy significant synergies with WWE.”
It is worth noting that, while the filing does list Base 10 as the owner of AEW, AEW’s owner is actually a different Khan family owned entity; Beatnik Investments LLC.
Should WWE Have Been Sold To Tony Khan?
While it is obviously a very fun thing to speculate about, ultimately, it was a good thing that WWE did not end up being sold to Tony Khan and AEW.
After WWE purchased WCW back in 2001, WWE remained the sole major promotion in North America for 18 years up until the launch of All Elite Wrestling in 2019.
The effects of WWE’s monopoly on the United States wrestling market is still being felt to this day, with AEW now offering a second option for wrestling looking for work in a major company, as well as the two separate entities driving up the price of new signings due to the competitive nature of the market.
As cool as it would have been to see Kenny Omega wrestle Seth Rollins, or MJF go toe-to-toe on the microphone with John Cena, the wrestling world as a whole is better with more than one major company in America, which would have been lost if Tony Khan controlled both AEW and WWE.
