Alex Marvez Gives Honest Reflection Of His Failed AEW Commentary Role AEW

Alex Marvez has opened up about his experience being apart of the original AEW commentary team at their first pay-per-view.

Marvez joined Excalibur and Jim Ross in commentating on the Double Or Nothing 2019 event.

On the latest AEW Unrestricted Podcast, Alex Marvez went into great detail about his experience and failure in the commentary role.

Marvez stated:

“It was horrifying, absolutely horrifying. Because I had never done play-by-play, and Tony Khan asked me to do play-by-play, and I’m not gonna say no to this opportunity. Listen, I was waking up at 5am every morning watching as much wrestling as I could, I took as many notes as I could about finishing moves etc, because there was an absence in my life, because I’m not gonna watch the other product that’s run by the people there, so I just didn’t watch wrestling for a while. And Tony dragged me back in about 2014-2015 so I was familiar with the New Japan product, but not as familiar with some other things that were going on.

“Plus, Jim Ross, Excalibur and I had never called a match together. We went to Atlanta, we did some matches, we tried to work on things, but quite honestly, we needed more time I think as a trio if it was gonna work out. And listen too, I just wanna give credit to Tony Schiavone because he was available, thank God. And he has elevated our programming so much and he’s the voice of different generations of pro-wrestling, and it’s fantastic to have him on board. Maybe in some ways he saved me.

“But the reality is, it was rough. Because I also didn’t realise too, how much volume you need when you call a match. Jericho’s a little over the top maybe for some, but I get it. And he was actually a person who offered me advice about what it was that he wanted to see from me – more energy. And it wasn’t that I didn’t have energy, it’s just, Excalibur, who, when he came out of the gates in that battle royal, and I’m trying to do too much in a battle royal, it’s a very difficult first match to start, and then I’m swimming in deep water. And then JR comes out and we’re rolling on this show and halfway through I’m thinking, ‘Man, am I really in the right place?’. And then social media, they were really nice to me. There’s just so many wonderful people on social media that had commentary as well (sarcasm).

“So the whole thing was a learning experience, I do feel a lot better about how I did at Fight For The Fallen on July 13, 2019, and that was a good run. But quite honestly we couldn’t have a better announce team, the people that we have in place, with Excalibur, Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone leading the way on Dynamite. What’s better than that? And I’m so happy for those guys to have that. Would I love to try it again someday? Sure, but I would also need to practice to be quite honest with you, and I would probably need to stop doing my NFL job because it is so difficult to prepare to do something that is completely different and I’ve never done, and not be able to dedicate 100% of my time to doing it.”

AEW quickly shifted and replaced Marvez with Tony Schiavone ahead of their debut on TNT with Dynamite.

He now co-host the AEW Unrestricted Podcast with Aubrey Edwards and works as a backstage interviewer for the promotion. Marvez also works for Sirius XM where he hosts a daily prime-time radio show.

As previously noted, Marvez and Edwards discussed an interesting story about Tony Khan waking up an AEW star at 2:30am to come to a taping on this same episode.
