Asuka said her goodbye on WWE Raw tonight in a backstage segment with her Backlash opponent from this past Saturday, IYO SKY.
At Backlash, SKY defeated Asuka, but headlines were made after the match as Asuka dropped her heel character and embraced SKY in a legitimately emotional moment.
This was followed by reports that Asuka would now be considered “semi-retired” and could be taking some time away from WWE, if not finishing up entirely.
Off the back of that, Asuka did appear on Raw tonight in a backstage segment with IYO SKY, where they once again shared a moment and hugged.
Asuka said she had been looking for someone to take over her position in the company, and SKY had earned the right to be that person.
SKY said: “Even if we fight, we will always be family.”
After that, Asuka and SKY said goodbye to each other and Asuka left out the door to the outside of the arena, seemingly indicating her time with WWE, for now at least, is done.
Michael Cole on commentary later said that Asuka’s future is “up in the air.”
Asuka’s Truly Legendary WWE Career
Asuka’s list of accolades in WWE is pretty much unmatched and makes her a true legend of the company, even if she isn’t the first name that comes to a lot of people’s minds in that field.
It’s a testament to Asuka that fans have so often called out the fact she deserves more, yet she’s actually accomplished so much.
She’s a four-time Women’s World Champion on the main roster, a five-time Tag Team Champion, and the longest reigning NXT Women’s Champion of all time in a reign that came during her historic undefeated streak.
In addition to all of that, she was the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble winner, and won the Money in the Bank ladder match as well.
Very few WWE stars – men or women – have a list of accolades like that, and the fact that fans still believe she deserved more goes to show how great she has always been.
She guarantees a good match at worst whenever she’s on the card, and her character work has always been outstanding too.
The idea of the “women’s revolution” often gets headlined by the Four Horsewomen, but Asuka was right there with them and deserves to be credited as such.
Asuka is a legitimate legend of WWE and will hopefully be honored and remembered that way.
