Backstage reaction to the new WWE Raw commentary team that debuted on September 30, 2019 has been revealed.
Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter had information on how those backstage feel about how the team of Vic Joseph, Dio Maddin and Jerry Lawler has performed so far.
Along with that, Meltzer also wrote about how WWE felt Samoa Joe performed filling in for Maddin earlier this week:
We were told that everyone recognized how good Joe is, and the general feeling internally is that Lawler has been better than expected and with his experience has helped Vic Joseph to get into the right rhythm.
Some direction for Lawler was also added:
The only real direction with Lawler was a push to stay away from dated cultural reference since the idea for Raw right now is to target younger viewers and push new stars.
He also reiterated the reports from yesterday that Maddin is still part of the broadcast team and has only been missing for the last couple of weeks to sell the Brock Lesnar attack from November 4.
Vic Joseph, Dio Maddin and Jerry Lawler was a three-man commentary team formed for the ‘season premiere’ show as Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Renee Young were moved to SmackDown on FOX.
Joseph and Maddin had worked together for a short while on 205 Live with Aiden English, but Lawler hadn’t even met Maddin before the first show they called together.
