Following the heartbreaking news that Roman Reigns is battling cancer and had to vacate the Universal Title, WWE were forced to make a decision about the future of the title.
An hour into Raw, Michael Cole revealed that the originally planned three-way between Reigns, Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel would become a singles bout between Strowman and Lesnar, with the winner taking home the title.
Lesnar was the previous Universal Champion, having won the belt at WrestleMania 33 and held onto it for well over a year before dropping it to Reigns at SummerSlam.
Strowman has never held the top prize, with his only championship gold in WWE the tag titles he won with young child Nicholas at WrestleMania 34.

With Lesnar expected to head back to UFC for a series of big money fights it seems unlikely that WWE will have him win the title at Crown Jewel. However, they have circumvented fan expectation in the past when the result seemed too predictable.
However, this time it is a little different. WWE have been forced into the decision to change to match by the unfortunate circumstances, it is not something they have been planning for months.
Either way, with a title switch in Saudi Arabia now guaranteed to happen, the stakes at Crown Jewel just got higher.
