British wrestling legend Ian ‘Doc’ Dean has passed away at the age of 48, the British Wrestlers Reunion has reported.
Dean made his debut at the age of 14 in 1984 for All Star Promotions, and would later team up with current NXT coach Robbie Brookside to form The Liverpool Lads, a successful British tag team.
Dean embarked on tours of Japan, Africa and Asia in the 1990s, and following a heel-turn on partner Brookside, an exciting feud was set up between the two. On occasions, Dean would team up with the third member of The Liverpool Lads, Liverpool-born Frankie Sloan.
In 1997, Dean was invited to attend the Super J tournament in Japan for NJPW. In what could be considered the apex of his career, he was given a push by defeating Japanese legend Jushin Thunder Liger in the hope that Dean would become a contender for the Junior Heavyweight Title.
Later that same year, he would sign a contract with WCW, where, despite his success in Japan, he became little more than an enhancement talent, which many saw as a waste of his potential.
He would work for them until 1998, when he decided to retire from wrestling as “his head was battered” after years of wrestling.
Everyone at WrestleTalk would like to extend our condolences to Ian Dean’s family and friends, and assure them that he will never be forgotten.
