An update has emerged on the news of CM Punk and Jack Perry being suspended by AEW after their backstage altercation.

It’s believed the issue between the two stems from a situation weeks ago where Perry wanted to use real glass for a segment that required glass to be smashed, and Punk advised him not to.

At All In, Jack Perry had a match against HOOK, during which Perry slammed HOOK onto a car windscreen before looking at the camera and saying: “Real glass. Go cry me a river”.

The match after that was CM Punk vs Samoa Joe, and Perry and Punk reportedly came across each other backstage before Punk made his entrance.

As for who initiated things and whose ‘fault’ it was, that really depends on who’s providing the information as to which side they give, so it’s not even worth getting into that beyond what we’ve already covered up to this point.

A couple of things that seem to be universally agreed is that at one point Punk got Perry in a choke hold (some claim this was an attempt from Punk to neutralize the situation), and Perry was asked to leave the venue immediately after the incident, while Punk stayed for a while but also left a bit later.

During the post-show media scrum, Tony Khan didn’t name any names, but did confirm there was an “incident” backstage.

He said:

“Yes there was an incident backstage before we went live on tonight’s show. We are investigating it and before I learn more about what happened, I can’t really address it at this time, so I can’t comment, but I did want to be honest with you and tell you that it is the case.”

Sports Illustrated, which is often fed stories by AEW, reported today that it’d confirmed both Punk and Perry have been suspended following the incident.

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer initially reported yesterday that both men were “believed to be” suspended.

This week’s Dynamite, Collision and All Out are all taking place in Punk’s hometown of Chicago.

The incident “remains under investigation by AEW”. It’s unknown how long it’ll last.

The SI report also outlines that there was talk backstage of potentially changing the match order right before the show began so Punk wouldn’t be going out straight after the incident, with Kenny Omega, Adam Page and Kota Ibushi vs Jay White, Juice Robinson and Konosuke Takeshita earmarked as a potential opener instead.

Obviously, that wasn’t necessary and Punk vs Samoa Joe opened the show as planned.

In an update on the suspension news, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful tweeted earlier today after the reports came out that Punk and Perry had been suspended that Punk had not actually been informed of the suspension by AEW.

Haus of Wrestling has further clarified this, reporting that AEW did not contact Punk directly to tell him he was suspended, but rather, Punk found out from his lawyer instead.
