CM Punk has recalled the WWE live event in Brazil that led to him having machine guns pointed at him during a match.
WWE had it’s first live event in Brazil back in 2012, which remains the only time that the company has held live events in Brazil due to an incident in one of the matches on the show.
During a match against CM Punk, Chris Jericho would go to the outside of the ring and grab a Brazilian flag from the crowd, before he threw the flag on the floor and walked over it.
Following the incident, police came to the ring with guns to bring the match to an immediate end due to laws in Brazil about disrespecting the national flag that Jericho had broken.
CM Punk Recalls WWE Live Event In Brazil
Speaking on The Late Run, Punk discussed what was his ‘craziest moment’ in the ring, and recalled having machine guns pointed at him.
He said:
“I had machine guns pointed at me. The company went and did a show in Brazil one time, we haven’t been back. Brazil I love you, I’d like to come back, lets try to work on that.
“My opponent that night rolled out of the ring and snatched a Brazilian flag from somebody. Brazil don’t play. In America, you get people who get bent out of shape, but there’s no law against it, burning flags or whatever, freedom of speech.
“He rolled in the ring, I’m down looking at him going ‘hmm, maybe no?’ I can’t remember exactly if he just threw it down and stepped on it, or if he maybe wiped his butt with it, Shawn Michaels did that with the Canadian flag too, and it was palpable, but still different than doing it in Brazil.
“The instant this happened, all of a sudden there’s a second referee in the ring, and I’m like ‘uh, what’s going on?’ One referee is talking to him, the other is talking to me, trying to relay the information, then our head of talent relations is in the ring. This all happens lickety-split.
“I’m looking around, then I turn and look, and the ring is surrounded by men in fatigues and one has his gun pointed directly at me. They were offended, and they said, my extra referee and head of talent relations were like ‘this match is over, we gotta wrap this up’.
“Homeboy who did the thing was like ‘absolutely not, I refuse to do this’, so I had to roll him up for real, stack him up, and the ref counted the three. Crowd pops, I grab the flag, jump onto the turnbuckle, I’m kissing the flag ‘hey everybody, sorry, I love you’.
“Then I got out of there, and they tried to snatch dude up, grab his passport, and we knew if he handed his passport over, he wasn’t coming home. So we, by the cover of night, got him out of there, and we continued on the tour and he went home.
“Very proud people. Legit, I just looked out and this guy was pointing a machine gun at me. Alright.”
