AEW
AEW Forbidden Door sets a new potential path for Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay that could see the pair collide at All In this August.
On June 28, AEW Forbidden Door will see Kenny Omega take on Zack Sabre Jr in singles action, while Will Ospreay faces Swerve Strickland in the Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final.
With the winner of the final going on to AEW All In and a shot at the World Championship, Ospreay overcoming Strickland would see him on course to face MJF at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
That is, of course, if MJF keeps the AEW World Championship until August 30, particularly with Kenny Omega interested in a potential title run.
Having revealed his championship ambitions to The Sportster, the possibility of Omega vs Ospreay at All In was raised, with the AEW star noting that it’s a ‘personal challenge’ as opposed to the stage on which a match-up could take place, saying:
“I know what I was capable of way back in the day, and I had the utmost confidence in saying, I know I’m the best. I remember the way that I would interact on social media, the way that I would talk to people in interviews. It’s changed so drastically from then until now.
“I know that I don’t have that blind confidence that I once had, because now everything needs to be more scientific. It needs to be more meticulous. I need to, like, plan every move. My diet needs to be on point. The way that I train needs to be on point. The way that I manage the bad parts that are going on within me can still come back to bite me in the butt.”
With Omega describing the AEW World Championship picture, he would list the potential candidates who could hold the top title, with Ospreay among them, stating:
“Sometimes you’ll have a champion, and you’ll know who’s gunning for it, and you know that’s going to be the story for the long run.
“We have MJF as our champion, but it could easily be Darby (Allin). It could easily be Kyle Fletcher. It could easily be (Konosuke) Takeshita, Kevin Knight, (Kazuchika) Okada. Who knows? Maybe it could be me. It could be (Will) Ospreay. Swerve (Strickland).
“We have so many possibilities where if that belt went around their waist, it wouldn’t look odd. It wouldn’t look out of place, and I would feel that the company is in good hands.
“I think it’s the first time where we’ve had close to almost 10 guys where you could put that belt on, and it’s going to be okay.”
Kenny Omega may be looking at the championship picture, but fellow AEW star Paul Wight has him in his sights as a name he wants to face before he retires.
Fight Forever
Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega are no strangers to each other in the ring, having competed multiple times since PWG All Star Weekend in 2015.
A legendary rivalry that grew in New Japan Pro-Wrestling saw Omega as a representative of Bullet Club feuding with CHAOS, with Ospreay as part of the stable.
Omega describing his past self as knowing what he was “capable of way back in the day” and having the confidence to back it up very much echoes the mentality of modern-day Will Ospreay, and for good reason.
In singles action, Will Ospreay reclaimed the IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion from Omega, defeating the star at Forbidden Door in 2023, having lost the title to him at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January of that year. It was a rivalry built on passion, pride and reputation, where both men tore into each other verbally with as much brutality as they would in the ring.
Omega may believe that he doesn’t have the “blind confidence”, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his eye on a potential barnstormer of a match, facing Will Ospreay again and elevating both their careers for very different reasons.
