Kenny Omega has shared an update on his health ahead of his match against Zack Sabre, Jr. at AEW Forbidden Door.

June 28 will see Kenny Omega face Zack Sabre, Jr. in at AEW Forbidden Door in their first singles match since August 2018 in the NJPW G1 Climax series for that year.

Having battled diverticulitis in the past, Omega has previously stated that he was “at peace” with the idea of a backstage role in AEW.

The star has since gone on to be able to return to the ring, with his most recent run setting up a match against NJPW’s Zack Sabre, Jr.

Speaking to The Sportster, Omega opened up about his current health status and how it has afforded him an opportunity at Forbidden Door, saying:

“I mean, it still goes day by day. “I have good days, I have bad days, but generally speaking, it’s moving in a positive trajectory. I feel like how I felt when I came back is leagues different than how I feel now…”

“I’m very glad that things have gone in the direction they have and that I feel the way that I do right before Forbidden Door, because otherwise I don’t know how else there would be a chance to wrestle against Zack Sabre, Jr., so that’s very fortunate for me.”

Omega would also indicate that he’s not thinking about slowing down when it comes to his in-ring career, suggesting a championship run could be in his future, stating:

“I just feel like now that I’ve come back after some very complicated issues with my health, I want to push myself as far as I can go, and if that takes me to the conversation of being a main event player, great.

“But what’s even better is being that main event guy that actually can win, can hold a belt, can represent a company. To me, that would be the ultimate victory over this sickness that I’ve had to incur. For me, it’s a personal battle, absolutely.”

A founding father of AEW, Omega is the first Grand Slam Champion in company history, having held the World Championship, International Championship, World Tag Team Championship (with Adam Page) and been a two-time World Trios Champion, with the Young Bucks.

Maintaining The Cleaner’s Reputation

2024 saw Kenny Omega miss the whole year due to diverticulitis, seeing him return to the AEW landscape and reinsert himself into the picture with ease.

The severity of the condition left Omega considering leaving behind his in-ring career in favor of a backstage role, as previously noted. That has not been the case, although the AEW star is well aware that he will hang up his boots one day.

Previously, Omega has stated that he wants to leave when he has “some semblance of athleticism left“, as opposed to working to a point where he “barely resembles” the star he’s remembered as being.

While retirement may have been on the star’s mind, there’s still clearly plenty of gas left in the tank of the 42-year-old, with the idea of a top title run in AEW being an interesting one.

Regardless of what the future holds for the star, his value to AEW stretches beyond the ring, and not just due to his EVP status.
