Adam Copeland has addressed a 2023 AEW Collision promo with Ricky Starks (now Ricky Saints in WWE), with a nod to the Attitude Era.

The October 14, 2023, episode of AEW Collision saw Adam Copeland and Ricky Starks exchange words in the ring, with the now-WWE star calling commenting on the former Edge’s “bug eyes”.

The pair would fire back with barbed comments, Copeland accusing Starks of taking fashion advice from The Rock, accusing the star of being a “vanilla, midget version” of the legendary star. Coming back from that, Starks would say “Wow, that really sent me over the edge”.

Speaking to SHAK Wrestling, Copeland addressed the promo, noting that he wasn’t in an angle with Starks, , saying:

“We got out there, he started cutting a promo on me, I was like, ‘Well, I’m not in an angle with him, ok.’ And that was it. It was just like a thousand promos in the Attitude Era. But by the next day it’s like ‘Ok, now what we got?’ I don’t, I’m sure Ricky doesn’t, I don’t care.”

‘Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy’

When it comes to comparing two or more things, comparison helps us draw up a list of differences and similarities. It’s from this that we can establish which we prefer.

It’s a tool that is often seen in wrestling discussions, potentially playing into playful discourse as we decide which company we prefer, whether nWo or DX was better, who was the better champion, ad infinitum. Opinion-based comparisons, even if facts are brought into the equation, can often lead to interesting conversations.

Comparing Ricky Saints to The Rock is high praise indeed, and there’s no doubt that the WWE star would revel in the opportunity to have a career as legendary as Dwayne Johnson, be it in the ring or beyond. That’s the joyous form of comparison.

Sometimes, though, comparison is the thief of joy. For some, it becomes the diminishment of something because it wasn’t something else. This can be seen in the assertion of any element of professional wrestling, or any form of entertainment, as lesser just because it wasn’t the other thing that was enjoyed, as opposed to evaluating it on its own strengths or shortcomings.
