The date for the WWE WrestleMania 42 rematch between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton has now been officially announced.

At WWE SummerSlam, Randy Orton made his first appearance on WWE television since WrestleMania 42, when he ran in and attacked Cody Rhodes during his Undisputed WWE Championship clash with CM Punk.

Orton would lay out Cody with an RKO, allowing Punk to go on and win the match with a GTS following the interference.

Cody and Randy would go back forth on the microphone on the following SmackDown, with Orton telling Rhodes that he gave him the permission to be the ‘best version of himself’ back in March.

Cody Rhodes Vs. Randy Orton Set For Sunday Night’s Main Event

Cody would approach Nick Aldis on last night’s SmackDown, where Aldis would tell Cody that he would get a match with Orton at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event.

Taking to social media, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis confirmed that the WrestleMania rematch between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton will take place at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6 in Cody’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.

This will be Orton’s first match since he lost to Cody back at WrestleMania, with him taking time off due to a back injury.

Is It Too Soon For Cody Rhodes’ Heel Turn?

With Cody Rhodes’ recent crowd reactions becoming less favorable, fans have begun speculating about whether we could see him turn heel soon.

The major holdoff on turning Rhodes heel is WWE not having any ready made top babyfaces ready to take the throne should WWE choose to turn Rhodes to the dark side.

However, WWE has a number of potential options to step up should they make the bold move and turn their top babyface into a bad guy, including Oba Femi, who was recently anointed as the future of the company by Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam.

Another reservation with Cody potentially turning heel would be learning from John Cena’s turn last year, and how the company did the turn simply to have a ‘moment’ without any long term plan.

Should WWE turn Cody heel, it should be in a major moment that makes sense story wise, as well as have a detailed follow up planned to avoid those same mistakes.
