WWE
An update has emerged on the possibility of a WWE star having to vacate their championship – not long after winning it.
At SummerSlam in early August, Chelsea Green won the six-woman ladder match to determine the Interim WWE Women’s Champion with the full champion Rhea Ripley out due to a knee injury.
While WWE was hopeful Ripley wouldn’t be away for long, she ended up undergoing surgery and being out for longer than anticipated.
Green, however, suffered an injury of her own last week on SmackDown when she teamed with Tiffany Stratton against Fatal Influence’s Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley.
Suffering a broken orbital bone, Green is ruled out of action for now, but it doesn’t seem like she will have to relinquish the Interim WWE Women’s Title.
In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it’s reported that the expectation is that Green won’t be stripped of the championship.
While she isn’t expected to wrestle imminently, she is set to be back on TV in some capacity.
So WWE now finds itself with both a WWE Women’s Champion and Interim WWE Women’s Champion who are unfortunately out of action for now.
A Bad Time For The SmackDown Women’s Division
Even without the unfortunate circumstances of Rhea Ripley and Chelsea Green being out, the WWE SmackDown women’s division is not in a good place right now.
A number of talented fresh names like Blake Monroe, Jordynne Grace, Giulia and Kiana James are afterthoughts, while, based on what happened a week ago, the WWE Women’s Title scene was going to be built around Nia Jax and Chelsea Green.
Nikki Bella and Paige have just kicked off a feud as well, which looks like it’ll mainly be playing out on SmackDown instead of Raw.
Perhaps when the show goes back to two hours at the start of 2027, we’ll start seeing more of those newer names being featured, but that’s four months away and if they just sit around for four months, that isn’t going to help anyone.
WWE also brought Tatum Paxley in from NXT last week, who hopefully won’t suffer the same fate as the other call-ups since she’s already in an alliance with Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss – but the real answer will come when that alliance ends and she either has new plans going forward or just vanishes off the show.
