Cody Rhodes ‘Ready’ To Offer WWE Title Shot To Unlikely Star WWE

New Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Cody Rhodes has admitted he was “ready to offer” a title shot to an unlikely star.

With Cody Rhodes looking set to potentially move past The Rock and Roman Reigns for now, the natural question becomes who will be the first to step up and challenge the new champion.

While we may get the answer to that question on WWE SmackDown, we now know who The American Nightmare once had in mind for a future challenger prior to defeating Roman Reigns on WrestleMania 40 Night Two.

Cody was a special guest on the post-WrestleMania edition of The Pat McAfee Show in Philadelphia (April 8), while the obvious points of discussion centred around the events of the weekend, the host brought up some comments Cody had made regain McAfee during his time in AEW.

McAfee recalled a time when Cody said during the AEW Revolution 2021 media call that the former NFL punter was trying to get a job in AEW “every other day”, something McAfee refuted afterwards on his show.

Cody recalled the comments, saying that this was an example of a “Cody Lie” – a term coined by Bryan Danielson that has become somewhat of a joke amongst wrestling fans, and he was actually “jealous” of McAfee’s impressive performances in NXT.

Cody noted that he had apologised to McAfee for the comments, but in preparation for his appearance on the same show over the weekend he was “ready” to offer McAfee a future shot at the Undisputed Title.

Cody explained:

“I was jealous of a match that he had because he showed superb athleticism. And when I came on here the other day thinking Pat was gonna be all abrasive with The Bloodline love and the Roman and the Tribal Chief and the acknowledgement, and he wasn’t, he was beautiful and generous as you all were.

“But I was ready, in the pocket I was ready to say well, Pat if I win that title on Sunday maybe we wrestle for that championship. We didn’t have to do it though.”

Cody made his first appearance on WWE TV as new champion on the Raw after WrestleMania, sharing an emotional exchange with Triple H, before being confronted by The Rock.
