Cody Rhodes Discusses Speculation Of Bringing Back ‘Winged Eagle’ Championship WWE

Cody Rhodes has punched his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 39 by virtue of winning the 2023 Royal Rumble match.

Cody has promised to finish the story he started upon his WWE return at last year’s WrestleMania.

Since his return, Cody has posted numerous teases about potentially bringing back the classic ‘Winged Eagle’ design of the WWE Championship should he capture the championship.

There is a precedent for this, as Cody brought back the classic Intercontinental Championship design during his reign in 2011, with fans believing that bringing back the Winged Eagle would be a good way to merge the WWE and Universal Championships once Roman Reigns drops them.

Speaking on WWE’s The Bump, Cody discussed his teases for the Winged Eagle title returning, noting that it is simply a pipe dream, and he’s not aware of plans to bring it back.

He said:

“Through my youth, the WWE that I was watching was really synonymous with the Winged Eagle. I think there’s a lot of people that love the Winged Eagle design, a lot of people like the Big Eagle, but the Winged Eagle was the one for me. Today’s design with the giant W is also incredibly special because it’s this walking billboard for the promotion.

“It was just a pipe dream. I post that and I don’t want people to think I’m calling a shot, I don’t want people to think I’m going into business for myself, the reality is I was able to change the Intercontinental Championship once before, which seemed absurd, and if I’m able to get to the finish line, biggest WrestleMania of all time, SoFi in Hollywood. If I’m able to get to the finish line and get my hands on these things that, like I said, have alluded my family until now, it just would be kind of a fun, maybe it’s just a pipe dream, maybe it’s just a thought, a glimmer but it would be fun to just say ‘lets just boil them down and bring back the Winged Eagle.’

“Now there might already, listen this is me just talking, I feel like I’m gonna leave and get a bazillion texts like ‘no no’. All the titles, it’s the equity within them that makes them special, but just from a design standpoint, I just have a lot of love and reverence for that one and it’s just a little pipe dream. I had the same pipe dream with the Intercontinental title and I was lucky enough to make that come to fruition so, follow along, because this is where the fun begins.”
