WWE
Drew McIntyre won’t be returning to WWE TV anytime soon, as the four-time world champion has been cast in another upcoming movie project.
It has now been almost two months since fans last saw “The Scottish Warrior” appear on WWE television, with his defeat to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania 42 Night One being his last in-ring outing for the company.
In his absence McIntyre had been busy filming his role in the rebooted Highlander movie back in his native Scotland, alongside Henry Cavill, Karen Gillan, Russell Crowe and former WWE star Dave Bautista among others.
While there had been rumors that McIntyre was set to return to WWE TV ahead of August’s SummerSlam 2026 PLE, it turns out that will not be happening after all, as he is instead heading to Spain to film another big Hollywood action movie project: ‘The Last Druid.’
According to Deadline, The Last Druid will once again see McIntyre star alongside Russell Crowe, as well as Crowe’s son Tennyson Crowe, Stacy Clausen, Pablo Derqui, Rose Leslie, Andreas Pietschmann and Daniel Zovatto.
More details on the movie’s plot and filming are as follows, per Deadline:
“Filming is underway in Spain on the film, which will see Russell Crowe do battle once again with the Roman Empire.
“A quarter century after Gladiator, the movie will tell the story of a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia. A peaceful Celtic elder (Crowe) must take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation.”
Along with the news of McIntyre’s new role, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson also provided an update on the former Undisputed WWE Champion’s status heading into deeper into the Summer.
According to Johnson, fans shouldn’t expect to see McIntyre back on WWE TV anytime soon, with reports that he was set for a return to TV ahead of SummerSlam on August 1 & 2 being “completely inaccurate.”
There has reportedly been “nothing on the table” for McIntyre creatively in WWE, due to his Hollywood commitments, with the Scottish star “circling several other Hollywood projects” since returning from filming his role in Highlander.
A Well Earned, And Timed Break From WWE TV For Drew McIntyre
Ever since turning heel in WWE back in 2023, Drew McIntyre has been one of the company’s most consistently entertaining and hard working performers.
At the beginning of the year, it appeared as if all of McIntyre’s graft was being rewarded, as he surprisingly dethroned Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship on the January 9 episode of SmackDown in Berlin, Germany.
While all signs pointed towards McIntyre taking the gold into WrestleMania 42, WWE had other plans, as they switched it back to Cody just 56 days after Drew’s triumph.
Despite the setback of that, and his subsequent loss to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania, Drew is clearly making great strides in his Hollywood career, something that should only elevate his overall stock in WWE when he returns. When the time is right for his comeback, McIntyre should have some renewed momentum and hopefully a major angle opposite one of the company’s top stars.
