IMPACT Recap: May 17 – June 14, 2018

Isn’t It Grand?

Aries and Pentagon Jr. put on a show for the Impact World Championship.

The match was interesting, with two count-outs and restarts. We don’t see that kind of long-play in matches very often these days, and it’s good to see the rules being used as part of the story. After winning the title from Pentagon Jr., it was clear that Aries had actually turned full heel.

Honestly, it’s something I’ve been wanting for ages. Aries is like Bobby Roode – better when he’s a heel. The fake smiling and attempts to be a ‘nice’ guy just don’t work for him, and for some reason, no one is willing to try a real badass face persona for him. Heel Aries is best Aries.

I don’t know for sure why they decided to take the championship off of Pentagon Jr., but personally, I think he just hasn’t been working as a champion. The whole ‘feud’ over the top title has been strange, with everyone being respectful (until now). Whether we see more of Pentagon Jr. or not, I hope the title scene can become a bit more ‘active’.

Finally, Impact has also announced that the Grand Championship (the mid-card belt) has been merged with the World Championship. This is something I have been asking for since my first Impact Review, and I’m so glad that it’s happening. While one of my biggest issues was with the name of the title, I’ve held the opinion for a while that there are too many championships to keep track of in a show that has less than two hours a week of airtime.

Hopefully, they don’t just replace this belt with another one, but I wouldn’t honestly be surprised.

What’s next for the champion? Well, it’s probably going to be a feud with Moose, which I’m not too excited for.

She’s Allie Need In My Life

It’s confession time. I’ve never liked Allie.

Allie has always been competent, but her character has always lacked any kind of emotional depth for me. I think it’s been more difficult for female wrestlers to claim the huge characters that the men often get. I don’t know if this has been an issue with fan-perception or a problem with management, but it’s rare that we get a potentially iconic female character in any promotion – and they seem to have to try twice as hard to get anywhere.

Impact has been different for a little while. Rosemary has really run the show as far as ‘character wrestlers’ in the Knockout’s division, but it’s great to even have one. Then Su Yung appeared and we got another great wrestler who was focused entirely on a character…

Well what-do-you-know, Allie is amazing too. After seeing her friend taken away in a coffin, which was then set on fire, Allie has changed. A darkness has consumed her, and it is the best idea anyone in Impact has had in ages. Way to revive a boring character, pat yourself on the back.

Despite the attempt at a character change, Allie wasn’t enough of a demon to defeat Su Yung. Su Yung is the new Knockout Champion.

Wearing Rosemary make-up and sporting a mix between her own music and Rosemary’s… honestly, I’m completely sold. Unfortunately, I don’t know if we will see it again.

Su Yung as champion, with the feud they’ve had, is perfect. I complained at Redemption about her even having a title match – but the story they have built makes all the sense in the world, in a weird sort of way.

This is no doubt leading to a feud between Su Yung and Rosemary, and I am completely hyped for it.
