Update: Io Shirai has reacted to speculation surrounding her WWE status. More at this link.
An update has emerged on Io Shirai, amidst uncertainty surrounding her future with WWE.
As previously reported, Shirai’s current WWE deal is set to expire next month. At the time of that report, Shirai hadn’t signed a new contract, despite having offers from WWE.
On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer indicated that Shirai appears to be preparing to leave WWE, noting:
“Io Shirai’s pretty much got her foot out of the door. Pretty much gone.”
It is believed that Shirai wants to return to Japan to be closer to her family.
The former NXT Women’s Champion could be about to take a similar path to Kairi Sane (KAIRI), who notably returned to wrestling in Japan earlier this year after her WWE contract expired.
Shirai last wrestled for the brand at NXT Stand & Deliver in April. She has been recovering from a leg injury since, but is expected to return to the ring relatively soon.
