Jim Ross Reveals Likelihood Of AEW Cruiserweight Championship

AEW commentator Jim Ross has discussed the championships currently active in AEW, and whether a new division will be introduced in the future.

Not counting the unofficial FTW Championship, there are currently 2 AEW men’s singles titles up for grabs. According to Jim Ross, AEW purposefully introduced championships with no weight restrictions.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Ross stated that it is unlikely that cruiserweight gold will sit alongside the AEW World and TNT Championships.

Ross pointed out that stars of cruiserweight divisions often feel they aren’t viewed seriously when they transition to the heavyweight division.

Here is the full quote:

“In AEW we have two major titles for the men and they have nothing to do with weight class. The TNT title and the AEW title has nothing to do with how much the guys weigh. There’s none of that there. I think that’s the better solution than where we were trying to go back then.

“I understand it’s back then but a lot of the talents when they knew they were going to put in the Cruiserweight, Junior Heavyweight, any term you want to use, that’s where you’re going to reside, they quickly wanted to find a real estate agent and move because they felt like it was the kiss of death and they were never going to be considered as formidable as a heavyweight. They weren’t going to headline pay per views, they were going to be support staff.”

The TNT Championship especially has been held by a range of different sized stars. From the late Brodie Lee to current champion Darby Allin, no TNT titleholder has looked like their predecessor.

On Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite, Allin defends his gold against Miro. Also set for the show, Jon Moxley will defend the IWGP US Championship against Yuji Nagata.

As per a recent report, there is a reason why this week’s episode of Dynamite has such a stacked card. Also in AEW news, the promotion has just announced their return to a touring schedule, promoting live shows for July.
