John Cena has officially confirmed his status and plans for this Saturday’s WWE Backlash 2026 premium live event in Tampa.

Yesterday, it emerged that the Benchmark International Arena was advertising Cena to appear at Backlash on May 9, despite there being no announcement from WWE or Cena himself to that point.

Now, John Cena has confirmed the news and provided some details on what he plans to do at Backlash.

He announced:

It’s official! I’m headed to #WWEBacklash! After months of planning and effort, I am SO excited to break some history-making news!

I can’t promise it’ll be perfect but I can promise it will change the WWE experience for Superstars and fans!

C U Live Saturday in Tampa or at home on the @espn app!

By that wording from Cena about changing the experience for fans, it appears as we speculated previously that his appearance will be related to the Club WWE membership program, which he has been promoting heavily in recent weeks.

It was reported today in regards to Cena’s appearance that his new post-in-ring retirement WWE contract includes a set number of dates for him to appear, so Backlash will make up one of those dates.

Potential Stories At WWE Backlash

There are some potential stories to look out for at the WWE Backlash 2016 premium live event on May 9.

In addition to John Cena’s announcement, there will also be the reveal of Danhausen’s mystery tag team partner for his match against The Miz and Kit Wilson – we shared a list of potential names who could be Danhausen’s teammate that you can find at this link.

Also, Roman Reigns defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, and while the early assumption was a retention for Reigns since he only won the title at WrestleMania, the fact he’s been removed from advertised appearances throughout June has cast a slight bit of doubt as to whether there could be more to the story.
