A WWE contract update has emerged on John Cena ahead of his advertised appearance at the May 9 Backlash event.

It emerged yesterday that Cena is now listed on the official Benchmark Interational Arena website for WWE Backlash, despite not being announced for the show by WWE as of yet.

This comes just a few weeks after he hosted WrestleMania in his first appearances since retiring from the ring in December.

Reason For John Cena WWE Backlash Appearance

On today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reports that John Cena signed a new WWE deal which includes a number of appearances, and Backlash will just be one of those appearances.

That means it isn’t something unexpected or out of the blue that’s being asked of Cena – he has agreed to make a certain number of appearances in his contract, and these appearances are simply part of that agreement.

Meltzer explained:

“So the John Cena thing, the situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be, because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again.

“They signed him to a contract which called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances. His deal called for these things.

“To me it’s kinda weird because he just did WrestleMania and it was supposed to be something special, and here we are a couple of weeks after WrestleMania and he’s doing it again.

“So it feels like, for a big guest like that coming back so quick and having him again, it kinda seems like why would you do it, almost.

“But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important and getting him on TV is important, and he’s signed for a number of dates so that’s one of them. That’s it.”

While his only appearances so far this year have been at WrestleMania, Cena has been presented as a face of the new Club WWE service and has promoted it heavily, so his appearance could be tied into that.
