John Cena is currently being advertised to appear at WWE Backlash 2026 by Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, which is hosting the event.
As of this writing, WWE has announced five matches for the May 9 event – Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, Seth Rollins vs Bron Breakker, IYO SKY vs Asuka, Danhausen & a mystery tag team partner vs The Miz & Kit Wilson, and Trick Williams defending the United States Championship against Sami Zayn.
While nothing has been said about John Cena by WWE, the Benchmark International Arena states on the Backlash listing: “JOHN CENA RETURNS TO TAMPA AT BACKLASH!”
Cena last appeared at WrestleMania 42 on both nights as the host of the event.
On night one, he announced the attendance and was in the ring for Biana Belair’s pregnancy announcement, thus adding one to the attendance count.
Then on night two, his attendance announcement was interrupted by The Miz and Kit Wilson, who were in turn interrupted by Danhausen and the Mini Danhausens for the segment that saw Danhausen use his own version of the Five Knuckle Shuffle before celebrating with Cena.
Potential WWE Backlash Role For John Cena
That segment comes back around at Backlash with a tag team match, but Danhausen’s tag partner is currently a mystery.
It would seem unlikely that Cena would be the tag partner considering his retirement from in-ring action against GUNTHER at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in December, but he is one of the names that Danhausen jokingly tagged on social media to potentially team with him.
At present, nothing else on the card really has any ties to Cena as far as making sense for him to get involved.
It’s possible that WWE and Cena were so happy with his hosting gig at WrestleMania that he could return in the same position for Backlash, and potentially make it a recurring theme for PLEs going forward. Cena spoke about how much he enjoyed being involved at WrestleMania without having the pressure of being in a big main event role.
Cena has been heavily involved in the promotion and seemingly the actual creation of the new Club WWE subscription club that was reecntly launched, so a potential appearance could be tied into that as well.
We’ll keep you posted if any updates on Cena’s status for Backlash emerge – as noted, nothing has been announced by WWE itself in that regard as of yet, just the arena listing.
