John Cena has commented on the possibility of another star breaking Ric Flair’s world title record, noting that he’ll congratulate them in person if they do.
WWE currently recognises Ric Flair as one of two stars with the most World Championship reigns in company history, with a recognised 16 World Title reigns.
When John Cena matched Ric’s 16 title reigns in 2017, it was heavily speculated that The Champ would be the first wrestler to have 17 recognised WWE World Championship runs.
Since then, a number of stars have approached the record. In the women’s division, Ric’s daughter Charlotte Flair won her 14th singles title on the main roster, claiming the SmackDown Women’s Championship in late December.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Cena was asked to name his favourite female wrestler.
Noting that he wants to stand beside Ric Flair and shake Charlotte’s hand if she wins a 17th title, Cena said:
“Man, there’s so many good ones now (female wrestlers). Like I said, there’s so many good ones (Cena said after someone in the audience shouted Rhea Ripley’s name).
“I do like the legacy that Charlotte (Flair) is creating for herself.
“I know Ric Flair had said something about if she were to win a 17th championship, we should be there, both to shake her hand and I got to see Ric recently and tell him that if that happens, we will both be there because I think that’s tremendous.
“I’m not shortchanging anybody else but just because I know and love Ric and I admire what Charlotte’s done, that’s my connection to that moment so that’s why I gotta say her.
Flair hasn’t wrestled since dropping her SmackDown Women’s Title to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 39.
Ripley has since been drafted to Raw. She and the rest of the Judgment Day faction were featured on Monday’s show.
