Here’s the latest on former SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi’s status, amid her WWE absence.
Naomi hasn’t appeared for WWE since she and Sasha Banks walked out on the May 16 WWE Raw taping. WWE then announced that the two stars had been suspended and stripped of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
While it was previously reported that the duo had agreed in principle to return under the new regime, both stars appear to be focusing on projects outside of the ring.
Per Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Naomi’s WWE deal was almost up when she walked out. It was pointed out that WWE could’ve frozen her deal for the time she has been away from TV, so she’d still be under contract with the company.
Noting that WWE and Naomi are still talking through things, Meltzer wrote:
“There are deal points with negotiations related to what is believed to be a new contract since her original deal was coming due that aren’t finalized. She would still be bound by the old contract as far as negotiating to go somewhere else because WWE can freeze it for all the time she missed unless she works out the rest of the time and completes the old deal so she can’t be a free agent without coming back first.
“But they are continuing to talk the points out. Naomi’s deal was almost up when she walked out.”
Sasha Banks was notably mentioned on commentary during the October 8 Extreme Rules event, one of the first references to the star on WWE TV since her walk-out.
We will continue to provide updates on Naomi and Banks as they become available.
