Matt Hardy has hyped up a future cinematic match between The Hardys and The Righteous in TNA Wrestling, stating his belief that the bout will be the greatest cinematic match of all-time.
The COVID-19 pandemic saw a rise in cinematic matches across pro wrestling due to the lack of live crowds, with WWE giving fans the Firefly Funhouse Match between Bray Wyatt and John Cena and The Undertaker & AJ Styles’ Boneyard Match, while AEW staged a cinematic Street Fight for Sting’s big return match at Revolution 2021, as he and Darby Allin wrestled Brian Cage and Ricky Starks.
Four years before that boom however, Matt and Jeff Hardy staged ‘The Final Deletion’ in TNA Wrestling, a match that shook up the industry at the time due to it’s creativity and popularised the concept of the cinematic, pre-taped match.
Their 2016 rivalry also gave Matt and Jeff a career resurgence in TNA, as Matt’s Broken character became one of the most popular in all of wrestling at that time.
Speaking with Soundsphere, Matt disagreed that supernatural gimmicks don’t work in modern wrestling, with the former WWE star citing how he and Jeff’s Broken characters helped “rejuvenate” their careers:
“I obviously disagree, because at the end of the day wrestling is entertainment. We are telling a story. We want to create compelling characters. That’s what we do, and it totally works for me.
“Wrestling is something we are in control of. A lot of people are critical of it, but once again wrestling is not your typical sports. We are not out here having a legitimate contest in a football game, or soccer, or basketball, or baseball, or whatever it may be. Pro wrestling is entertainment, and the pro wrestlers who are the most successful will have created characters that people actually care about, (that) they’re emotionally invested in.
“If you can connect to something, that people can connect to, then that is where you become successful. Us becoming Broken Matt and Brother Nero completely rejuvenated our career. It strengthened our run as we went forward and gave us other characters that we could play with and go back to.”

While the Final Deletion is still celebrated by many fans for its innovation, Matt Hardy is aiming to top that, and every other cinematic match that has followed, when The Hardys take on The Righteous.
The two teams recently waged war in the first-ever Wicked Garden Match on the June 4 episode of TNA Impact, and as of now, there is no date for a future cinematic match, however, it is something that is seemingly in the works according to The Hardys themselves.
Matt continued:
“I’m gonna tell you the truth, we’re at the point with The Righteous, who we love, I think are very talented, great performers as well, and they fit well with the Broken Hardys because if you’re watching them they almost seem like guys, you’re on an acid trip, they’re very cultish. They have these qualities that seem magical or supernatural to a degree.
“And I think when it’s all said and done, the greatest cinematic match that happened in pro wrestling is going to be the Broken Hardys vs. The Righteous. When it’s all said and done, I think this match is going to be a gateway that’s going to help us reinvent our characters and become something, the most entertaining versions of The Hardys that you ever have seen.”

Following The Hardys and The Righteous’ Wicked Garden Match on June 4, the company has filed a trademark application for the bout, suggesting that it could perhaps be used again going forward – click here for full details.
